Historia
At the intersection of the normal and the weird, lies the Grey: a place where whatever you believe in hard enough comes to dangerous life, and death, magic, and the unexpected lie in wait. The journey begins with a ghost's pleas for justice that lead paranormal PI Harper Blaine to an unsuspected crime. Ranging from harrowing to humorous, these ten tales from the imagination of bestselling author Kat Richardson travel into the realms of mystery, science fiction, fantasy, and more.

Surprisingly uninteresting
Revisado: 03-30-24
I couldn’t finish most of the stories. I already cared about Harper Blaine from reading and re-reading the Graywalker series, so I did manage to slog through those, but I wouldn’t call the experience enjoyable. There were some good ideas in the other stories I skimmed or skipped. But, they all felt like car tires spinning on ice - something is happening, but nothing is engaging.
The final story came closest to what I’d expected. It was better than OK, now that I think about it, but the narrator voiced Harper rather soft and sweet, and that distracted from the story a bit.

Historia
Harris’s short story “Small Kingdoms”, one of Harris’s best-selling short stories, was originally published in the November 2013 issue of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and then was included in The Best American Mystery Stories 2014. The other stories in this collection are "Sarah Smiles", "Small Chances", and "Small Signs." NBC will produce a new series called Redliners, based on "Small Kingdoms".

Missing text, but otherwise throughly enjoyable.
Revisado: 12-03-23
At the 51:17 point, an entire sentence is missing. It’s jarring, because the narrator’s tone sounds like she’s remarking on something just said and the rest of the paragraph seems to come out of left field. It’s not really a spoiler nor does it leave a plot hole, it’s just really annoying to know that something is missing, but have no idea what or how much was left out, so, I had to get the ebook to compare.
The missing sentence is “Melayna‘s volunteered to be on the staff counseling service,“ Ann said.
It makes me wonder if there were other missing parts that weren’t as obvious.
The individual stories flow together almost like they’re just chapters in the same book.

Historia
The appearance of the warp drive from the long lost Fenrir spaceship triggers an epic quest for Captain Mikhail Volkov. According to the drive's computers, Fenrir had been lost to hypothetical "nowhere" of subspace, but with the drive's housing covered with coral and sea life, obviously Fenrir has gone somewhere. Faced with genocide at the hands of the alien Nefrim, humans need a miracle to survive. On the chance that Fenrir's mysterious location holds such a miracle, Mikhail jumps into the unknown and crashes into the endless blue of the Sargasso Sea.

Awesome story - lackluster narration
Revisado: 03-07-20
I've read and re-read this book many times. First, in hardcover and later on Kindle. I was happy to see it available as an audiobook, and didn't hesitate to purchase it in yet another format. I was excited to revisit my "friends" in the Sargasso, but the narrator sounds so bored and disinterested that it was hard for me to enjoy the story. I think I will appreciate using WhisperSync when reading the ebook is interrupted by other tasks, but I can't recommend the audiobook on its own.
I wish Luke Daniels had narrated; that would have been perfect.

Historia
Ree Reyes’s life was easier when all she had to worry about was scraping together tips from her gig as a barista and comic shop slave to pursue her ambitions as a screenwriter. When a scruffy-looking guy storms into the shop looking for a comic like his life depends on it, Ree writes it off as just another day in the land of the geeks. Until a gigantic “BOOM!” echoes from the alley a minute later, and Ree follows the rabbit hole down into her town’s magical flip-side.

Girl-geeks are not kawaii
Revisado: 05-02-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The book needs a decent narrator. Farhat's cutesy, whiny, valley-girl affectation made it impossible to enjoy the story. I've ordered the print book, and I'm sure I'll like it.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I couldn't get past the first chapter; the narration is that terrible.
What didn’t you like about Julia Farhat’s performance?
She read the book as if she were voicing an adorable but dim anime character. I kept getting the mental image of a cute little girl, wearing a confused expression, blinking her wide eyes while searched for the "any key". Not only was nauseating, it was completely incongruous with the narrative.
Any additional comments?
After some manipulation and a fair amount of geekery, I found that bending the pitch down to 89% of normal and setting playback speed to 129% made it almost bearable. Almost.
