Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Brilliant writing
Revisado: 03-08-24
A beautiful story narrated wonderfully by Tom Hanks. I slowed it down to enjoy it at normal speed. I don’t do that often. It’s story of a family over time that will get you angry and righteous, sad and apathetic, and happy in a way that you can accept the outcome of it all with a cool balance. Danny is not me, but I felt I understood the character as if it were. I love science fiction and dystopian worlds, but this book stands above them.

Historia
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

A Brilliant tragedy of the human experience.
Revisado: 01-24-24
War is written by many authors to be heroic or tragic. Something occurring. Sometimes it’s a backdrop. This story feels different. Dark but not in a way you want to crawl in a ditch after. More you just want to think about the whole thing. Cranston was brilliant.

A History of Europe is a masterful narrative, bringing together the continent's common threads of history from the end of the ice ages until the present day. Leading historian Professor Jeremy Black takes a journey through the vast sweep of European history, examining events as diverse as the rise of the Roman Empire, the brutal Viking raids, the cultural explosion of the Renaissance period, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the rise of consumer culture in the 21st century.

A detailed timeline following the beginnings of Europe to the present
Revisado: 12-18-23
A cut and dry overview of European history. The best way to view it is as an index book. Very much timeline driven in a way to provide an account of what happened without providing details. This book is best used for identifying further learning interests. If for instance you are interested in post Rome Europe, this book will provide several areas of interest that covers the basics around the region.
No account of Europe can possibly be this short without leaving out major details. In many ways it is like reading the associated press version of history. I would recommend it with the caveat that you should go in with the mindset that this is not meant to complete your educational experience, but rather be a simple introduction to help guide you like a map.

Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

As relevant today as it was when it was written.
Revisado: 12-17-23
With a book like this you would hope we would have progressed past many of the issues posed. Sagan predicts many of the issues that plague our society today. Specifically regarding science education and the focus on tech and engineering rather than scientific discovery. The rise of mysticism and pseudo science coupled with the degradation of public school systems is disconcerting. The book is well written and in many ways is a chapter by chapter eloquent takedown of all of the things that seemed to bother him with society. Some chapters can start to feel a bit over explained and too many examples are used at times. It is a good fun read overall and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thinking.

Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Amazing
Revisado: 11-05-23
The Light Bringer in many respects was superior to the previous two installments. While I enjoyed them, this is the first book that settles on the same level as the original trilogy. Excellent narration provides life to a well written work. It is just sad I must wait for the final book of the series.

In Lies My Teacher Told Me, James W. Loewen brings history alive in all its complexity and ambiguity. Beginning with pre-Columbian history and ranging over characters and events as diverse as Reconstruction, Helen Keller, the first Thanksgiving, the My Lai massacre, 9/11, and the Iraq War, Loewen offers an eye-opening critique of existing textbooks, and a wonderful retelling of American history as it should - and could - be taught to American students.

An excellent critique on American text books
Revisado: 10-16-23
Americans have long been mired by textbooks that at best can be described as soda pop history. This book takes a hard look at that text and provides many of the historical facts left out. It also provides reasons why textbooks are as they are. I recommend this book to anyone who plans to take part in American society. One should challenge their nation to be better and consistently improve. To understand the past allows you to challenge the present to develop the future.
