Bloch Stalks the Ripper Again
Revisado: 02-03-25
Robert Bloch wrote several Jack the Ripper stories in his career from Weird Tales to Star Trek. This later novel is an engaging version of the real life murders and investigation.
Matt Godfrey does an excellent job bringing the work to life. Valancourt Books is doing classic horror fans a service by bringing more of Bloch’s work back into print.

Historia
In this genre-bending novel, among the first to have launched sci fi into literature, a group of remarkable social outcasts band together for survival and discover that their combined powers render them superhuman. Together, they may represent the next step in evolution - or the final chapter in the history of the human race. As they struggle to find whether they are meant to help humanity or destroy it, Sturgeon explores questions of power and morality, individuality and belonging.

Rudnicki Ellison Gestalt Brings Sturgeon Classic to Life
Revisado: 11-22-23
The novel is in three parts and the first is a slow build but it pays off in the rest of the novel.
The heart of the book is Part 2 Baby is Three, which is the novella that was expanded into the novel. It’s a joy to hear Harlan Ellison perform this section. It’s POV is perfect for him.
I’ve had it in my library for years and glad I finally gave it a listen.

Historia
When Michael K. Williams died on September 6, 2021, he left behind a career as one of the most electrifying actors of his generation. From his star turn as Omar Little in The Wire to Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire to Emmy-nominated roles in HBO’s The Night Of and Lovecraft Country, Williams inhabited a slew of indelible roles that he portrayed with a rawness and vulnerability that leapt off the screen.

Revisado: 12-17-22
Michael K. Williams left us with not only an amazing acting career and work to better our communities but also this thoughtful work about his life and struggles.
I’m glad his co-author Jon Sternfeld was able to complete the memoir posthumously from their interviews.
Dion Graham is an excellent narrator as always.

Listen for No Doors, No Windows
Revisado: 01-28-21
This audio book contains two short story collections, The Deadly Streets and No Doors, No Windows. While The Deadly Streets is a good collection of some Ellison's 1950s and 1960s stories, No Doors, No Windows is an excellent collection of his mystery and crime stories. (There are some crime stories in The Deadly Streets, too.)
No Doors, No Windows contains three stories, The Whimper of Whipped Dogs, Status Quo at Troyden's, and Tired Old Man, which rank among his best work.
Michael Braun and Mia Barron do a fine job of performing the stories. And Harlan Ellison reading Tired Old Man from Voice From The Edge Vol. 3 is also included so you get a chance to hear Harlan read his own work.

It was fun to rediscover the Jack Finney novel through this audiobook. I’m sure I appreciate Finney’s writing more as an adult than I did as a teenager.
Quite a bit of the novel was used in the movie.
The performer is director Don Siegel’s son and there is a short interview with him at the end of the audiobook about his father’s film.

Historia
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That's how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to this audio the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

Rock n Roll Hero/Purple Dinosaur
Revisado: 03-03-17
I'm so glad Bruce Springsteen chose to narrate the audio book version of his autobiography. It would be a great read but hearing his voice adds another dimension to the experience.
Springsteen himself admits that he hasn't told the entire story but what he has chosen to reveal is powerful. His openness about his struggle with mental illness may help to reduce the stigma that continues with those diseases.
The book is another great American story that stands with the best of his songs.
I already liked Springsteen but this book made me like him even more. Anyone who has the insight and wit to describe his job as celebrity to his young child as the same as Barney the Purple Dinosaur is worth reading.

This collection shows a vibrant young writer with a wide-ranging imagination, ferocious creative energy, devastating wit, and an eye for the wonderful and terrifying and tragic. Among the gems are "All the Sounds of Fear", "The Sky Is Burning", "The Very Last Day of a Good Woman", and "In Lonely Lands". Though they stand tall on their own merits, they also point the way to the sublime stories that followed soon after and continue to come even now, more than 50 years later.

Your Audio Guide to Ellison Wonderland
Revisado: 06-14-15
For me any new Harlan Ellison audiobook is a cause for celebration. If you’re a fan, this 2015 edition of Ellison Wonderland includes a lengthy new introduction and a new story within the introduction section.
If you haven’t read Ellison before these are earlier works and you may first want to check out his Edge in My Voice collections, which include many of his best stories. He also reads/performs many of the stories in the collection, which I prefer. The other performers are also very good.
Ellison Wonderland is fun and the new material makes it worth your while if you’ve previously read the book.
Here is a breakdown of the contents:
• GO THOU AND DO LIKEWISE: AN APPRECIATION OF HARLAN ELLISON by J. Michael Straczynski
• Author’s Introduction: THE MAN ON THE MUSHROOM (1974/1984)
• Author’s new Introduction: DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU: THE LAST DANGEROUS INTRODUCTION TO ELLISON WONDERLAND (2013)
• COMMUTER’S PROBLEM
• DO-IT-YOURSELF (Written in collaboration with Joe L. Hensley)
• THE SILVER CORRIDOR
• ALL THE SOUNDS OF FEAR
• GNOMEBODY
• THE SKY IS BURNING
• MEALTIME
• THE VERY LAST DAY OF A GOOD WOMAN
• BATTLEFIELD
• DEAL FROM THE BOTTOM
• THE WIND BEYOND THE MOUNTAINS
• ARE YOU LISTENING? (AKA, THE FORCES THAT CRUSH)
• NOTHING FOR MY NOON MEAL
• HADJ
• RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY
• IN LONELY LANDS
• BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARDS

Historia
Five thousand years out of the Labyrinth, the Minotaur finds himself in the American South, living in a trailer park and working as a line cook at a steakhouse. No longer a devourer of human flesh, the Minotaur is a socially inept, lonely creature with very human needs. But over a two-week period, as his life dissolves into chaos, this broken and alienated immortal awakens to the possibility for happiness and to the capacity for love.

Excellent Contemporary Fantasy Novel
Revisado: 02-06-14
I bought the book because I was intrigued by the title. It didn't fulfill any of my preconceived notions (like retelling the Minotaur myth from his perspective). I'm not complaining.
Instead it's the story of an immortal living a pretty ordinary life in the United States. Most people accept him as part of their world even though he is a minotaur.
Neil Gaiman mentions in his introduction that author Steven Sherrill suggested Holter Graham as the narrator. This is the first time I've listened to a book narrated by Graham and his work is excellent. He brings the characters and text to life.
The book is rich on it's own but this is an example of what a great performer can add to a work.

Charles Dickens' story of solitary miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is taught the true meaning of Christmas by the three ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, has become one of the timeless classics of English literature. First published in 1843, it introduces us not only to Scrooge himself but also to the memorable characters of underpaid desk clerk Bob Cratchit and his poor family, the poorest amongst whom is the ailing and crippled Tiny Tim.
