Historia
Charlemagne was easily one of the most fascinating figures in Western civilization, as well as the most heroic and romantic. The 47 years of his reign marked some of the most significant and far reaching events of the Middle Ages. Undoubtedly, it was his enlightened vision for Europe that resulted in the Carolingian Renaissance, a period of cultural flowering that never really ceased to develop, and which led in a straight line directly to that period of astonishing achievement we now call the High Gothic.

Very good coverage of the period.
Revisado: 07-13-06
This book covers the period well and is narrated in a captivating style, albeit with a strong English accent. I didn't find the accent too difficult to digest and overall this audio book was definitely worth my while. There are many detailed insights into what determined the development of the historical events of that period.

Historia
A History of Greece continues with the bitter struggle between Sparta and Athens for mastery of the Hellenic world. Though Sparta finally emerges victorious, her victory soon turns to ashes with the ascendancy of Thebes and the still greater power of Philip of Macedon. Philip unites an unwilling Greece with his iron policy. Athens gives up her independence, but maintains an aloof intellectual and artistic leadership in the Greek world.

Easy to listen to.

I liked the style of this narrator. Combined with skillful writing, this book is easy to listen to. The English accent is not as strong as in some other audio history books. It is very detail, not at all just an overview, so if a short history is what you are looking for, this book is not for you. If you are seeking greater insight into the history of Greece, I would definitely recommend this book.

Historia
A History of the Middle Ages is the amazing story of European man in transition. It is a dramatic chronicle of 1,000 years of political, social, and economic transformation beginning with the dissolution of the classical Mediterranean civilization and ending with the first flowering of the Renaissance. It is also the story of two new religions, Christianity and Islam, both of which were destined to dominate the mind of every person in those new civilizations arising in their wake.

Great facts, monotonous
Revisado: 03-27-06
Listening to a sample audio is a good idea, in order to get a taste of the narrator's style. If it doesn't put you to sleep, then you will enjoy the audiobook. The very long introduction is focused on the actual absence of a time period that could be defined as "middle ages". The pace picks up a bit in the following chapters, but I do find that I can take it in small doses only, before I drift off. Much like a university lecture, good but monotonous.

I think that this is a really well written book on anxiety, if you can get over all the 9/11 references in the first few chapters. The fourth chapter and on is really good, it is not too simplified, this author actually thinks that listeners have brain cells. He describes the brain areas responsible for anxiety and associated disorders and how the wiring of these areas may result in abnormal function under some circumstances, yet be advantageous in others. The one lost star is for the overwhelming "how to deal with 9/11" introduction, which would likely be lost on most Canadians.
