The title of the book makes it seem like it’s meant for the regular person who wants to eat for their own blood type, but the writing is setup for a scientist or doctor not a normal person. On a basic level, why wouldn’t the specific blood types be separated into their own chapters? If I’m a Type A, I’m only interested in Type A information. Instead it lumps everyone together and compares the blood types, which again leans toward a more scientific interest than personal.

Good theory, stretched entirely too long

I think Mel took a good theory that was very quick to get across, and stretched it entirely too thin. This book has so much fat that could be trimmed and still have the same effect. Mel likes to use her own personal examples which aren’t compelling so they don’t do anything to prove her point further. She’s also, respectfully, very unlikeable from most of her personal anecdotes and from the constant bragging about how she’s revolutionized ppls lives, she’s worked with these huge companies, ppl have the slogan tattooed on them.

Incredible story, insulting audio

This book is well written and an great read, especially for fans of Jenny and Chiquis Rivera. It’s however incredibly insulting that they have a non-Latinx voiceover, who puts on a terrible “Hispanic” accent whenever reading direct quotes despite the fact that those people speak perfect English. How can the person narrating a nonfiction book not verify something like that before bastardizing the protagonist’s voice and the voice of her iconic mother?

I usually love Augusten Burroughs, and I don’t know if this was meant to be a satire of sorts but it’s essentially a book full of personal opinions. Which wouldn’t be that bad except it’s a book full of opinions on subjects that should be handled with much more care - such as eating disorders. It’s offputting at least, dangerous at most

This is a book on keeping tidy but coming from a person who is tidy. It didn’t seem actionable to person who doesn’t already have that strength, like other books of this type

The book itself is timeless but this version has a woman making commentary periodically, and it takes away from the actual content. She’ll explain really obvious ideas or try to connect the book to modern times, which kind of defeats the purpose of napoleon’s writing style

Good info, but catastrophized and subjective

I think there was a lot of information in this book to make people start to question their relationship with food and dieting, but there is a lot of catastophizing. I noticed it in the chapter about bariatric surgery, where the same information I had been presented through the bariatric process is presented in a totally different tone. If I hadn’t already been familiar with the info in an objective way beforehand, I would’ve been scared away. The author also repeats often about how Diet culture is a social justice issue related to race and poverty, which I don’t quite believe because im not sure a person who is struggling to eat at all will be fixated on eating a certain diet. It seems out of touch with deeper and more urgent social justice issues.

I think she wanted to tell relatable stories, but it was incredibly boring. Situations include “my grandpa picked me up from the mall and was pissed I was late”, and “this boy at school turned me down for the dance” but lack anything unique/Interesting.

Love hearing her story, some chapters unnecessary

Would you try another book from Sophia Amoruso and/or Sara Jes Austell?

Yes

Which scene was your favorite?

I love hearing her story and how she became a girlboss, but somewhere down the line Amuroso gets caught up in preaching rather than sharing and the book loses its umph. There's a section of the book where she gives advice on resume writing, cover letters, and interviewing -- all things I would prefer to hear from a career coach and not an online boutique CEO. Very unnecessary.

Who do you think would benefit most from listening to #GIRLBOSS?

I think this book is perfect for women anywhere from 17 to 35. As a young professional myself, despite the preachy-career coach section in the middle, I definitely took away a lot of ideas for how to carry myself better and get more out of my life/career. I also work as a mentor and I bought this book for my mentee because it can put her in the right mindset to start her career off well (and she COULD actually use the resume/interview help).
