I don't usually take the time to write reviews anymore, but I figured I should warn people that this book is probably not the kind of book you think it is. It's about a gay American Jesus freak who does absolutely no research ahead of his trip and seems determined to have absolutely no fun along the way due to his religion and conservative upbringing. Regardless of where he is, his observations and insights barely rise above total ignorance and are constantly flavoured with Christian fundamentalist idiocy. If you want to hear a guy complain about trying to reconcile Jesus and his sexuality, you'll really enjoy this book -- that's about 25% of it. That might have been an interesting angle to the story too, except he fails to come to any satisfying conclusions about how his mother and church hate what he is, or that maybe he should actually live his life for himself and not for those who despise how God made him. Because of this, the book is more often than not painful to listen to and God is namedropped so much that I guarantee you'll cringe. Props to the dude for making it all that way to Patagonia, but if you don't actually try to have fun doing so it's probably not worth writing about. Narration was good, though. Not sure if the stereotypically gay affectation was on purpose?

Wow. I went into this audiobook without any expectations and was blown away. Eisenberg has written and directed something truly great here. The monologues were really well acted and emotionally charged. I was pretty heavily invested in the three characters and the themes that were explored over their respective chapters. I suspect it's not for everyone, but I think if you're the kind of person who likes it, you'll like it a lot. Definitely recommended.

I was kinda digging it until I realized it had a whole religious Christian angle to it. Some good quotes and words of wisdom, but if Jesus isn't your bag maybe think twice about this one.

A collection of cultish New-Age spiritual nonsense quotes which carry little-to-no meaning. Sounds like Mr. Morihei led a very interesting life, but I'm not quite sure how a martial art could be based on his cliche and self-important musings about peace, love, and the universe.

Come one, come all to Barack Obama’s Cavalcade of Accents! Men, women, black, white, Asian - he does them all. Quite possibly one of the best Audible narrators out there. I mean, Wil Wheaton’s great an’ all, but couldn’t Obama have read me “Ready Player One”? I guess I should also mention how much I appreciate the tremendous honesty and self-examination that makes this an excellent read. There, officially mentioned. Now get this book.

I really enjoyed everything the author has to say except all of the weird Christian stuff which Peterson shoehorns into every topic of discussion with total disregard for relevance. The frequent dips into theology tend to undermine many of his otherwise flawless logic, not to mention the importance of his message, which is a shame.

I really liked the first two-thirds where the author made some very good, convincing points that get you thinking. Unfortunately, the last third ended up being a strange right-wing, anti-globalist rant and a deep dive into the realm of survivalist fantasy. I’ve lived in Somalia and other failed states, Jack, and I’m afraid they’re not exactly humanity’s high water mark. Feel free to play zombie apocalypse in the woods with your brahs, but I don’t suspect you’d last very long in the dog-eat-dog anarcho-libertarian wet dream that you champion. Real men live in the real world.

Couldn't put this one down -- listened to it all in one day. Starr has written an honest and heart-warming tale about the trials and tribulations he had to endure to start a boarding school in far-flung Somaliland. The author does a great job describing his motivations, the challenges he faced, and the remarkable children who would go on to do great things because his Abaarso School existed and persisted against all odds. I found it a very well-paced book that is interesting throughout, plus the narration is great. The narrator even did a pretty great job of getting all the af-Soomaali pronunciations correct. Best of luck to all of Abaarso's kids: the future of Somaliland is in great hands.

A really great listen. I bought the book on a whim and loved every chapter of it. Also loved the folksy accent of the narrator! Definitely would recommend to my friends!
