Historia
Lady Elanna is fiercely devoted to the king who raised her like a daughter. But when he dies under mysterious circumstances, Elanna is accused of his murder - and must flee for her life. Returning to the homeland of magical legends she has forsaken, Elanna is forced to reckon with her despised, estranged father, branded a traitor long ago. Feeling a strange, deep connection to the natural world, she also must face the truth about the forces she has always denied or disdained as superstition - powers that suddenly stir within her.

Too trivial, too annoying
Revisado: 05-24-23
I didn’t like this. The story was too trivial and predictable. The world building was sloppy. There was no character development. The main character was stubbornly trying to avoid doing the right things, but her motivations didn’t really make sense. She was just obnoxious. I didn’t even like the narration, the use of “accents” wasn’t logical.

Historia
Can You Forgive Her? is the first of the six in the Palliser series. Trollope inextricably binds together the issues of parliamentary election and marriage, of politics and privacy. The values and aspirations of the governing stratum of Victorian society are ruthlessly examined, and none remains unscathed. But above all Trollope focuses on the predicament of women. 'What should a woman do with her life?' asks Alice Vavasor of herself, and this theme is echoed by every other woman in the audiobook.

Too long and slow
Revisado: 08-16-21
I usually like long reads (listens), but this story was quite slow and felt way too long. Also, for modern readers the whole plot is out of date and I found it quite frustrating at times. It probably made more sense and was more interesting to readers at the time.

So much word padding
Revisado: 11-30-17
The book is too long winded and, to be honest, not very good. Had it not been the last in the series, I would have given up on it.

Repetitive
Revisado: 10-14-16
If this was a TV series, it would be discontinued by now. Go on assignment, everything seems to go fine until everything falls apart, mix in some long winded romanticised historical tidbits, rinse and repeat.
To top it off, this one has the bare minimum of a resemblance of a plot.

Historia
Country girl Denise Baudu arrives in Paris hoping for a position in her uncle's clothing shop. However, her uncle's shop, along with other small shops in the area, is doing poorly. This is due to the large store across the street - The Ladies' Paradise - which is swallowing up the small specialty stores by offering 'one-stop shopping' at discounted prices. 19th Century Paris is experiencing the dawn of the department store. Despite her loyalty to her uncle, Denise is drawn to the progressive Ladies' Paradise and it's owner, the driven but charismatic Monsieur Mouret.

Can't stand the narrator
Revisado: 08-26-16
The narrator's pronunciation of French words is atrocious. Also, she sounds like she's thoroughly bored by the whole thing. No enthusiasm, and terrible acting.
I can't stand 16 hours of this, so I'm returning it for a refund.
I hope they will record this again with a better narrator, since I really want to "read" the book.

Terrible narrator
Revisado: 06-22-16
The story is good enough, but the narrator is so bad I seriously consider reading the next one on paper. Nearly all voices except Fitz and Bee are exaggerated or just plain wrong.

A mediocre RPG campaign
Revisado: 05-27-16
- Author lacks writing skills
- Linear predictable story
- Terrible world building
- No character development
I'm sure the author and his friends had fun when they played this campaign, but I don't need to hear about it. Stay clear unless you are very, very bored and desperate. Sure, I've read worse. That doesn't mean this is worth wasting 60 hours on.

Struggling to fill a word quota?
Revisado: 09-30-15
The whole series is full of padding. The same events shown several times from different viewpoints, or the same past events described over and over. I felt treated like a goldfish that is unable to remember anything that happened more than a few pages back. Listening to the entire series back-to-back made it even worse, since each new book assumed you remembered nothing of the previous one. I suspect the author was simply trying to fill her word quota and didn't really have enough story for four books.
I wish I had time to read books on paper, it would have been better if I had been able to skip/skim through the endless repetitions.
Narrator was slow, making it even more tedious.

It's about religion, not about a boy in a boat.
Revisado: 07-29-15
This could be an entertaining story about a boy in a boat with a tiger, but it isn't. It's a story about religion, societies, culture and all that yada yada. That was rather obvious rather early on. Some people could probably get many hours of amusement from analyzing it. I just found the whole book rather boring and too obvious.

Not as fabulous as I had expected
Revisado: 11-21-14
The status of this book as one of the classics in SF had me expecting something brilliant, but I found it rather average. Maybe it improves in part two or three, but I'm not in a hurry to find out.
Also, how could anyone write SF where every woman in the entire galaxy is a housewife? The only named female in the book is a stereotypical whiny "high maintenance" wife.
