Historia
Now a classic of true crime, Victim is a compelling and tragic look at how lives can be changed forever by a random act of violence. During an armed robbery, several hostages were brutally tortured, shot in the head, and left for dead. Victim focuses on the members of one family - including a mother who died after the attack and a son who was left barely alive - as they fought for his survival and struggled to rebuild their lives.

over the top
Revisado: 09-05-21
I read a lot of true crime, but couldn’t listen to more than one chapter of this book. The narrative switches back and forth from third to first person accounts in the same chapter, the latter performed with an overly dramatic, almost shrill voice. The imagined dialog reads like fiction.
The book may be exemplary for recognizing victim impact, but the story deserves better presentation.

Historia
Master historian Barbara W. Tuchman looks at history in a unique way and draws lessons from what she sees. This accessible introduction to the subject of history offers striking insights into America's past and present, trenchant observations on the international scene, and thoughtful pieces on the historian's role. Here is a splendid body of work, the story of a lifetime spent "practicing history".

Historia
On December 18, 1867, the Buffalo and Erie Railroad's eastbound New York Express derailed as it approached the high truss bridge over Big Sister Creek, just east of the small settlement of Angola, New York, on the shores of Lake Erie. The last two cars of the express train were pitched completely off the tracks and plummeted into the creek bed below. When they struck bottom, one of the wrecked cars was immediately engulfed in flames as the heating stoves in the coach spilled out coals and ignited its wooden timbers

Newspaper accounts compiled, poor storytelling
Revisado: 03-27-19
The information in this book is quite interesting, but it needs to be re-written in story form. The marginal narration reads like the author found an abundance of newspaper articles, then compiled all the facts in a linear fashion narrative. Each step of the incident is described, naming every person involved - first, middle initial, last - every. single. time. This could have been a more compelling story if the author had followed each person for some length, even a few paragraphs, then woven the stories together in a larger framework.

Historia
This book presents the fullest account yet written of the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Rooted in a wealth of oral histories, it tells the dramatic but underreported story of a people who confronted the unprecedented devastation of sixty five thousand homes when the eye wall and powerful northeast quadrant of the hurricane swept a record thirty-foot storm surge across a seventy-five-mile stretch of unprotected Mississippi towns and cities. James Patterson Smith takes us through life and death accounts of storm day, August 29, 2005, and the precarious days of food and water shortages that followed. Along the way the narrative treats us to inspiring episodes of neighborly compassion and creative responses to the greatest natural disaster in American history

Great content but poorly narrated
Revisado: 12-29-16
What made the experience of listening to Hurricane Katrina: The Mississippi Story the most enjoyable?
My husband volunteered in Hattiesburg, MS, so we knew how widespread the damage was, but the focus with Katrina is always on New Orleans. I was happy to see good coverage of other areas affected by this disaster.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Claton Butcher?
Someone who does more than read the words off the page with an occasional lilt thrown in for variety.

Good stories if you can stand the narrator
Revisado: 02-10-16
Would you try another book from Kim Cross and/or Tracy Brunjes?
Kim Cross, yes; Tracy Brunjes, no.
What didn’t you like about Tracy Brunjes’s performance?
The narrator's mawkish reading is over the top and unnecessary, even off-putting.
Any additional comments?
I found this book well written, and the stories compelling.

If you could sum up The Greater Journey in three words, what would they be?
Highlights an interesting aspect of American history that I'd never heard before. A very pleasant and easy listen for times when I don't want to have to concentrate.

Written by a leading dermatologist, The Blue Man and Other Stories of the Skin provides a compelling and accessible introduction to the life of our largest organ, while also recounting the author’s experiences with memorable patients he has treated who suffer from mysterious skin conditions. Robert Norman begins by highlighting the qualities of the skin, tracing the history of its conditions and diseases, then examining the cultural, social and psychological impact of both color and irregularity.

Irritating performance
Revisado: 06-25-15
What disappointed you about The Blue Man?
The narrator's pronunciation of the word skin irked me from the very beginning, to the point where I couldn't listen any more. Also very poor performance in general, very sing song.
Would you ever listen to anything by Dr. Robert Norman again?
I would give him another chance. I'd give this book another chance if it was narrated by someone else.
How could the performance have been better?
Get someone else.

Would you try another book from George Huppert and/or Neil Holmes?
This book should have been heavily edited to organize and condense repetitive text. I couldn't get past the first chapter.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Narrator was fine.
