Historia
As a necromancer, Shae loses a little more of himself every time he uses his magic. Always cold, always touch-starved, the only thing that helps is human contact. But that's hard to come by when those same dark powers scare everyone away from him. Nobody likes a necromancer. Arthur's still bitter and broken after his last lover stabbed him in the back, and the last thing he needs is another brush with evil. When he agrees to escort the wandering necromancer north, he's just doing a public service. But he never expected Shae to be so clingy. Or distractingly attractive.

Good Story, Poor Narration
Revisado: 12-03-24
While I really enjoyed this book (the characters, the world building, etc.) I almost couldn’t get past the narration. While the voicing for the characters was excellent, the narrator took insane pauses at the strangest ties. While I normally listen to audiobooks at 1.15 speed or slower, I had to listen to this at 1.3 speed and even that felt slow and the strange pauses were still glaringly obvious. I don’t know if poor audio equipment was used for the recording but I could hear every intake of breath, every swallow, every smacking of lips and it was so distracting!!! Kai Rubio gave the characters distinct voices but everything else about the audio was hugely frustrating. I will finish this series via kindle or other media, not through audible.

Historia
My name’s Connor Lisowski, and here’s what you need to know about me: I’ve had a massive crush on my best friend’s older brother since high school. Everyone thinks I’m straight. I have two dads but I’m afraid to come out. I’ve never even been kissed. And somehow, I’ve been roped into pretending to be Reid’s boyfriend for the holidays. Who’s Reid, you ask? Only the aforementioned best friend’s older brother who never looked at me twice.

Good story; bad narration
Revisado: 01-11-24
I loved this final installment as we got to see glimpses of past couples and characters loved from the earlier books. Connor and Reid’s romance is lovely with some quirks and surprises along the way and seeing Connor more grown up and still loving his dads is awesome.
This gets a lower rating not because of any drawbacks from the story itself, but the narration. It opens with Reid’s POV which is supposed to be blue blood and stuffy but he sounds almost British? And the nasally, stereotypical “gay” voice the narrator used combined with the sense that he desperately needs to swallow his saliva is *extremely* off-putting. I was able to power through because it got better after a little while (perhaps he finally swallowed?) and the way he did Connor’s voice was much more tolerable. Still, I will *always* listen to a sample prior to purchase when coming across this narrator in future.
Tl;dr: The story and romance was great, an excellent finale; narration is excruciating before you get used to it.

I live a simple, small-town life. Helping with the family restaurant, my side gig as a ride-share driver, hanging with my best friend, and making the most of the extra time with my ghost grandma. The only exciting thing to happen to me in the past year was when Gabe moved to town—too bad Nonna scared him off. It’s hard to impress a guy when your dead grandmother calls him the devil.

Underwhelming Finale
Revisado: 12-26-23
While the first three books of the series were excellent, I was a little disappointed and a LOT underwhelmed by this (assumed?) final installment.
Two books’ worth of buildup to the big, final confrontation and very little actual payout. Kind of like the final big fight scene in the Twilight series that didn’t actually happen. It felt more like a book of character study: introducing one new major character and giving two previously small side characters more lines but then not really giving the plot the attention it needed.
The romance between Tom and Gabe was also lackluster. Tom has been a side character with increased presence in the narrative since Book 1. Gabe was introduced in Book 2 but didn’t seem as fleshed out as Connor. Then in this book they were thrust together and secretly for the last year have had feelings for each other? Then over the course of 2 weeks fall madly, “forever” in love? It all felt very rushed.
Gabe and Connor’s younger brothers were fun characters to see more of and were critical to the solution of the main conflict. Tom’s Nona is back and even more nosy, pushy, and ridiculous than ever. The demon Mark is a delightful character who really adds a lot to the story but could’ve used a touch more character development but I liked how he came back in the end. The plot twists and uncovered truths were either really good and well done or way too convenient to believe so a mixed bag on the entire plot.
Tl;dr Worth reading for the characters and the conclusion of the story (especially because Book 3 ends on a massive cliffhanger) but don’t expect character development, a reasonable romantic subplot, or a satisfying Final Big Confrontation that was promised earlier on in the series.

Jackson’s HEA
Revisado: 06-30-23
This series just keeps getting better! I was so excited to see Jackson was getting his story, and the introduction of Wyatt is excellent. I love that we get additional snippets of Hugo and Brand’s continuing story and a little glimpse of Michael and Josiah as well, plus the amazing Raimy. A good love story, some mystery action, a bunch of loose threads coming together for a big reveal, and Dog finally tells us her true name. Great story; devastated that I now have to wait for the next one!

Even though Chase--one of my favorite authors--insists he wants to be left alone, I refuse to let him wallow in whatever’s drowning him. A local bookstore owner and author myself, I’m intrigued by the man who’s a master of the written word. Unfortunately, his social skills could use a lot of work. Even so, I’m determined to pull the irritable and frustrating man out of the dark pit he’s fallen into and back to the surface no matter how hard he fights it. I only hope dragging Chase down that fiery path just might reignite his spark and that I don't get burned in the process.

Couldn’t Finish
Revisado: 06-25-23
Unlikeable, gruff MC meets unlikeable, preachy MC and it just drags on forever. The setting is nice, the premise has promise, but 7 hours in I cannot find the plot anywhere. It’s more a character study of grief than anything else which would be fine but I unfortunately got so far in that I can’t return it. DNF

Tristan Everett has always preferred the company of the dead because they usually don't talk back. Being a somewhat awkward introvert working as a pathologist at the Hackney Public Mortuary suits him just fine. That is, until a freak accident with a rogue ice cube and suddenly he can see ghosts. No longer content to just lie on the table and let him figure out how they died, they're now peering over his shoulder critiquing his work and confessing their most lascivious sins before skipping off merrily into the afterlife.

Revisado: 06-25-23
I love the world these characters inhabit and constantly had to stifle hysterical giggles when listening in public.
The mystery is pretty well-plotted and the characters are all *chef’s kiss*. Joel Leslie does excellent narration as always to bring the individual characters to life and I can’t wait to experience more adventures with Tristan, Danny, and all their friends.

Great story, Terrible Production
Revisado: 05-31-23
The story is good but I would suggest getting a physical copy. The narrator is *painfully* slow, so much so that the pacing of the story gets caught up in it so I had to listen at 1.2x speed. Also, for some reason, the production quality of the audio is extremely poor. I will be returning to get my credit back and finding a paperback copy if I want to enjoy this story again, but I will not listen to it again.

BORING and Badly Narrated - Did Not Finish
Revisado: 03-26-23
The reader is consistently reminded that the two main characters are “boring” and “not at all attractive” yet suddenly his eyes are an alluring color and his body is that of an athlete and they both like men so we’re supposed to believe that they will end up together somehow? These two horribly boring characters are surrounded by other rather unlikeable side characters and a mysterious curse which the author seems to find much less pressing than obsessively detailing interior decorations and sibling squabbles and interpersonal dynamics from an outsider’s perspective.
This is made worse by the narration. While the narrator’s voice is perfectly pleasant while narrating, when he does dialogue it is abrupt, cartoonish, and inconsistent. Neither main character has a clear voice so it is often jarring when they speak and confusing to decipher who is talking. All but one female character has a cartoonish, ridiculous voice which is frankly insulting.
I will leave the mysterious curse a mystery because I cannot bear to listen to another minute of this. I made it almost to the end of Ch. 11 before giving up and deciding my time is better spent leaving a scathing review. While I usually have no problem following a narrative, I consistently found myself distracted from the story (because the main characters are distracted) or falling asleep. If you suffer from insomnia, give this a listen. If you want a satisfying story to enjoy, find literally anything else.

Jay’s Messed Up List On Repeat
Revisado: 02-18-23
Firstly, the narrator has an extremely irritating, nasally voice which thankfully I was able to tune out after a while.
Secondly, main character Jay is highly unlikable and *extremely* naive. Who goes from his first kiss ever to intercourse in barely a week!? Jay is given bad advice which he follows blindly, and instead of learning from the relationship mistakes he witnessed in his hometown, proceeds to repeat them or worse. The elaborate apology/fix-it scheme at the end is cute but there was a distinct lack of everyone owning up to their roles in the mess and not enough resolution. Overall, very few of the characters are likable and Jay’s entire situation is hard to believe and extremely screwed up.
Also, I know it probably presents differently on the page, but hearing “Jay’s Gay Agenda” and all 8-10 items listed every 15 minutes got extremely annoying by the third repeat. No thanks.
