It's wedding season on Nantucket. The beautiful island is overrun with summer people - an annual source of aggravation for year-round residents. When one lavish wedding ends in disaster before it can even begin - with the bride-to-be discovered dead in Nantucket Harbor just hours before the ceremony - everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect. Paced well but plot muddled
Revisado: 09-14-24
Enjoyed this book for the most part. Icertainly couldn’t put it down. But the pace, investigation determined by the constant investigation and interrogation, broke up the flow of the plot.
Also, there were several British characters and the narrator could not do a British accent, which also disrupted it for me, because the women and men sounded the same.
But if you’re driving for many hours as I was, it will definitely get you entertainingly from a to b.

Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

Shakespeare’s wealth of works penned by a female
Revisado: 08-27-24
Another totally unique novel from Jodi Picoult. The breadth of her writing is astonishing.
Like Diana Gabaldon‘s explanation and portrayal of time travel, Jodi Picoult’s well researched position that Shakespeare was female is very plausible. There’s little of Shakespeare’s personal life except a portrayal of a young, married man with three children with little schooling or travel. That he might have been a a far better educated, well traveled woman is revelatory.
Shakespeare often has compelling, accurate portrayals of women, which is rarely true of male writing then or now. He also frequently has women disguising themselves as men. The fact that Shakespeare had so little education and travel experience makes his colorfully detailed backgrounds and political knowledge a bit magical. That he could have been a women well versed in discrimination and intolerance, whose life’s trials had her do much traveling and exposure to the upper class personalities and events really rings true.
There has always been accusations that Shakespeare’s work was penned by some other male writers, usually no more plausible than himself. Picoults prosition is extraordinarily well researched, and plausible.
Quite the exciting idea to entertain, that Shakespeare was a woman. Right up there with the realization that Jesus was a brown or black Jew.

Very sad but resolves it self
Revisado: 08-09-24
A bit too dismal in the middle. I would’ve edited that down a little bit. But the relationship between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was quite wonderful as it evolved and thus a refreshing ending. The narration was wonderful as always.

Totally creepy
Revisado: 06-19-24
There are a variety of female characters all stereotypes made up of the worst qualities a woman can possess.
It’s begins intriguing to beguiling then creepy and ends up preposterous.
If you enjoy twists and turns and being totally creeped out this is your book.
Personally it felt a waste of my time and am sorry I purchased it.

Too depressing
Revisado: 05-22-24
The characters have all been abused in some way. It’s a bit relentless. The jumping around in time is perhaps creative but very confusing.
I’m a big Picoult fan. This started out ok but was distressing and then kept getting more and more upsetting.
Definitely my least favorite of hers

Revisado: 05-07-24
Am very picky about my listens. Most books don’t pass my muster.
This one, a mere 4 chapters in, has made me laugh and chuckle and ponder and rewind because I wanted to hear something that I don’t think I heard totally.
Love this book. It’s a winner. Go for it.

Potpourri of magic, mysteries & wondrous teas
Revisado: 10-14-23
This was a lively listen. All the characters grew throughout the story, with a steady flow of self awareness, while inhabiting the Stars Hollowlike town of Dove Pond, home of the intriguing Dove sisters, each with a miraculous talent. Not your run of the mill power to fly or be invisible, but abilities to hear books name the person who should next read them, make teas that can heal in a myriad of ways including having dreams of deceased relatives return to offer sage counsel, understand the sounds of wild life and much more for the seven sisters, who are the soul and lucky charm for Dove Pond.
Several stories told, each slightly intertwined with the other. Not confusing, but very entertaining, educational and oh so human. Was so hard to come to the end. Made me seek out every other book Karen Hawkins wrote about Dove Pond. And a fun group of reads they were.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Brilliant Original Book
Revisado: 12-16-22
Be aware this book does begin slowly and a bit oddly, but don’t give up. By the third chapter you’re totally drawn in and feeling a part of their lives, trials and tribulations.
The characters all evolve, overcoming amazing obstacles in their lives, that very quickly you’re rooting for them.
The ending is amazing too, because you’re ready to move on, but loved your brief entry into all these characters’ lives.
This book is absolutely a worthy listen.

Another ideation of a fantasmic concept
Revisado: 10-21-21
Read several disparaging reviews of this book, and did have a hard time getting into it (left it two times before) but, once noticing Julia Whelan reads it, just had to listen.
Of course the narration was super, but also enjoyed the story and the twists and the characters and particularly the relationship reflections. Also, the forgiving of ones trespasses was gratefully taken in, as one who has made some truly horrendous decisions. That good can come from whatever action is done is not a way I'd looked at, my failures before. And truly, upon reflection, despite my "dark" moments, my life has turned out quite well. Would have it no other way. Maybe in Another Life did gift me with that.
Right before his book, I'd listened to The Midnight Library where also arises the concept of parallel universes, something I'd thought about often and sensed the possible reality of, but had never seen it fictionalized in a novel. How serendipitous then, to have been able to hear TWO different versions of that fantasmic idea! Wade though the awkward beginning. A truly rewarding tale awaits you.

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.
