Truly terrible.
Revisado: 09-10-24
Take this for what it is worth, I rarely if ever write a review, good or bad, but I felt compelled to save people from harm.
I purchased this book because of the 5 star reviews. I honestly wonder if they were all fake. I have nearly a thousand books in my Audible collection and this one is the worst by far. I rarely stop a book early even if it is poorly written. I gut books out. Not this one, it’s awful.
Stilted storytelling, with wooden characters, completely unbelievable. I only made it half way through before my head hurt due to too much eye rolling.
The narration is passable but is wasted on drivel.

Historia
Ven was once a holy man, a keeper of ancient archives. It was his duty to interpret archaic texts, sorting useful knowledge from the heretical ideas of the Burning Age - a time of excess and climate disaster. For in Ven's world, such material must be closely guarded so that the ills that led to that cataclysmic era can never be repeated.

A Slow Burn
Revisado: 07-06-22
A great listen!
I’ve never read this author before but I thought I’d pick it up on a whim.
The author drops the reader into the deep end of a dystopian future. I think this is where a lot of readers may find it a tougher slog. Stay with it, enjoy the writing, the plot line reveals itself in due coarse. It’s well worth the effort.
This book is a Slow Burn that just gets better and better.

Historia
It's the last ski weekend of the season and a mishmash of snow enthusiasts are on their way to a remote backwoods cabin. In an odd pilgrimage through the mountains, the townsfolk of Coalton - from the ski bum to the urbanite - embark on a bizarre adventure that walks the line between comedy and tragedy. In a blend of mordant humor and heartbreak, Angie Abdou chronicles a day in the life of these industrious few as they attempt to conquer the mountain.

Great Story
Revisado: 08-17-21
The story is very engaging, funny and well written. The narration is poorly done. It sounds like the narrator hasn’t even even heard a Canadian speak. The Québécois, character sound German or Russian or some mix of both while a handful of other characters sound like they are from Fargo Minnesota. The narrator needed some help, shouldn’t the producer be there to catch some of these mistakes. All this aside I would recommend this book. It made me laugh several times.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Historia
In sun-drenched Sicily, among the decadent Italian aristocracy of the late 1950s, Giuseppe Tomasi, the last prince of Lampedusa, struggles to complete the novel that will be his lasting legacy, The Leopard. With a firm devotion to the historical record, Lampedusa leaps effortlessly into the mind of the writer and inhabits the complicated heart of a man facing down the end of his life, struggling to make something of lasting worth, while there is still time.

This book is So Well Done!
It is definitely different than By Gaslight, a book that I also consumed with relish, but different in a good way. The narration was perfect.
Listen to this book and enjoy the journey of memory after memory after memory. Very rich.

Historia
London, 1885. In a city of fog and darkness, the notorious thief Edward Shade exists only as a ghost, a fabled con, a thief of other men's futures - a man of smoke. William Pinkerton is already famous, the son of a brutal detective, when he descends into the underworld of Victorian London in pursuit of a new lead. His father died without ever tracing Shade; William, still reeling from his loss, is determined to drag the thief out of the shadows. What follows is a fog-enshrouded hunt through sewers, opium dens, drawing rooms, and seance halls.

Great Book!
Revisado: 01-14-20
John Lee narrates at the the same high standard that I look forward to.
The story is very interesting. I really enjoyed how the author ties together several different peoples stories from several different timelines. Very entertaining. Gritty. I felt as if I needed a bath just to wash the soot from my hair. Job well done.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
