Have loved this series for years, but the story is written so that you don’t have to have read any of the other books to know what’s going on. Having the foreknowledge of what’s to come just makes some parts more enjoyable.
Getting conversations and perspectives that happened outside the main narrative answered some questions from ‘Dart’. However, it raises more interest in how the events of ‘Chosen’ play out. I hope eventually there’s a companion version for that book as well.
Performance wise the narrator is good but there are odd pauses that made me wonder if we were at a chapter break in the middle of a conversation. I got used to it eventually but it was a distraction,

Henri is quite accustomed to dangerous and unusual cases landing in his lap. Being partnered to the Shinigami Detective likely has something to do with it. What he is not accustomed to is the queen herself marching into his lab and handing them such a case.

Steampunk noire fun

The two (3?) different narrators is hard to pull off in audio. Between having 2 readers and very different speech patterns for each character, this one pulls it off without having to state it outright at the beginning of each chapter. Great series for anyone who enjoys a light fantasy/mystery that mixes all the modern technology with Victorian proprietary. Can’t wait for the rest of the series to come to Audible.

White noise

If it is played low and with little regard for the atmosphere of what to expect, the track could be a good white noise tune out. Otherwise it mostly sounds like static with the occasional plop of water. I’m sure standing in the presence of that much water flowing in the wild is amazing, but just hearing the sound not worth listening.
