Enjoyable But...
Revisado: 07-20-20
I enjoyed following the story of the mom and three sisters. These are easy reads and have enough substance to keep you engaged throughout each book. I do wish the author wasn’t so focused on weight and appearance. There is a thread that follows all three books and each of the sisters and mom. It’s unnecessary and disappointing.

Modern Love Story
Revisado: 08-07-18
I picked this book because the Whelan is a great narrator. I thought this would be a light summer read, but it surprised me. I loved all of the literary references and the main character was well written. The story was more substantial than I expected it’d be. SPOILER it reminded me of Me Before You quite a bit.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

He does it again!
Revisado: 03-20-18
Backman does it again with Beartown! I loved this story and the protagonists. His character development is unmatched and the reason why I think his books are so endearing. Even this book, which deals with difficult and controversial subjects, has characters that you become invested in even though they are complicated and imperfect. I hope this becomes a film so more people can be touched by its message, which isn’t easy or neatly tied up at the end. It’s real.

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy. So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagles likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves. Complicated? Awkward? Completely. But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary.

Endearing and Quirky

Any additional comments?
I thought this was an endearing story and I loved the quirkiness. The latter is what made this stand out from similar stories. I enjoyed the light read.

Sweet Story

Any additional comments?
This was highly recommended to me. I feel like it was a sweet story and I now want a Mrs Brown in my life, but I do not think this story lived up to the recommender's review. It was endearing, but it wasn't deep or thought provoking (not that every story should be).

Historia
For high-school senior Celeste Watkins, every day is a brutal test of bravery. And Celeste is scared. Alienated because she's too smart, her speech too affected, her social skills too far outside the norm, she seems to have no choice but to retreat into isolation. But college could set her free, right? If she can make it through this grueling senior year, then maybe. If she can just find that one person to throw her a lifeline, then maybe, just maybe.

Overly Saccharin and Nauseating
Revisado: 11-06-16
Would you ever listen to anything by Jessica Park again?
Maybe
What didn’t you like about Tavia Gilbert’s performance?
Her inflections were at times hyperbolic, but so was the writing.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed Flat Out Finn and thought it was an endearing story. This story is saccharin and had me cringing throughout with the over-the-top romance. It was as if a hormone-fueled teen with lofty romantic notions of love wrote it. I also thought the ending was annoying. They are FAR too young.

Preachy with an Agenda
Revisado: 11-03-16
What disappointed you about The Mothers?
I really thought I would like this book, but I couldn't get past the anti-abortion tone that is really strong throughout the story. I am definitely not pro-abortion, but I felt like the book was trying to teach a lesson that abortion will only bring tragedy and fall out to the woman and everyone in her life. I know that's over simplifying and I don't mean to sound myopic, but I feel strongly this book had an agenda and was almost condemning those women who find themselves in similar positions as Nadia. I didn't sense any compassion from the author or the characters toward Nadia, whose mother had committed suicide and whose father was lost in his grief. She was in a vulnerable position and yet she was condemned throughout. Too preachy for my taste.
Has The Mothers turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Have you listened to any of Adenrele Ojo’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Performance is strange
Revisado: 10-25-16
The production for this was off. Whenever the narrator would switch, you could tell it was spliced in and not very smoothly. It took some time to get used to it. The story itself is good so if you can get past the awkward production then it's worth it.

Historia
When Kristin Chapman agrees to let her husband, Richard, host his brother's bachelor party, she expects a certain amount of debauchery. She brings their young daughter to Manhattan for the evening, leaving her Westchester home to the men and their hired entertainment. What she does not expect is this: bacchanalian drunkenness, her husband sharing a dangerously intimate moment in the guest room, and two women stabbing and killing their Russian bodyguards before driving off into the night.

Struggled with narration
Revisado: 02-17-16
I loved Midwives and wanted to love this but I just didn't. I think the story was good, but Alexandra's narrator really kept me from connecting more with her character. The narrator's tone and inflection were really irritating for me. I would often cringe or find myself not really listening to her parts of the story, which is not ideal considering she's a main character. Consider reading this one instead. I wish I had.

Well written--cleverly written--story about the dichotomy of secrets. The way the author weaves the story between the three main characters and the interviews with the periphery
characters is great. I will be getting her other books.
