Not what I am used to from Ken Follett. It’s been awhile but I remember his novels moving along with the story. This one spends so much time in flashback that I got bored, even losing track of the actual story.
I guess he felt all this time recounting individuals’ histories is somehow important to what is going on in the novel. I would return the book but I bought it in a twofer sale and don’t want to return the other book.

I have enjoyed the first couple of Rex Nihilo stories, however, this one is so unoriginal and tedious I just could not finish it. While Rex is chasing the McGuffin with his band of misfits, he encounters thinly disguised characters and storylines from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. That’s when I quit and returned the book. I have no interest in seeing where this story goes.

Just an average post-WWII treasure hunt involving the Russians, Germans, Israelis, and others going after gold in a sunken WWII U-Boat. The hero just happens to have the contacts that are needed to outfit the excursion and overcome the various obstacles. (That's not a spoiler. What else did you expect to happen? The hero to fail.) Not a bad way to kill a few hours.

One thing that drives me crazy in most novels involving ships is the lack of simple nautical jargon. But most of all the habit of calling every access through a bulkhead (wall) or deck (floor) or wherever a "hatch." Hatches are different from scuttles, which are different from doors. Yes ships have doors. They can be water tight doors, weather tight doors, or non-tight doors. Then there are numerous subcategories of doors on war ships. Hatches are large openings between decks with closable covers while scuttles are small round openings between decks with closable covers, which may be embedded in a hatch or standalone.

Not up to the typical Reacher standards.

While the story does okay as a typical Reacher adventure ,,, it was only 'okay.' You don't typically hear Reacher repeatedly say he doesn't know how things are. A number of times his approach was "let's try this and see what happens." I missed the Reacher who "knows" what is going on and how to approach the problem: who comes up with the plan and it generally works even with a small hiccup, maybe. So, for me, this was a below average Reacher happening.

Bought because I have liked some of the fanciful titles by this author. This, however, purports to be historical fiction. Turns out I found the approach to be slow and uninteresting. That does not mean you won't like this book. It is all a matter of taste. Happy reading, no matter what you choose to read.

As much as I enjoy Monk with his foibles, this was just to many. The author seemed to go out of his way to create more and more issues for Monk to complain about. Every other page there was a new issue to be addressed and overcome. To the point that the story was dragged down.

I gave up after a hour and returned the book as unenjoyable. Even though the book was free to listen to, it was not worth the price or time.

I was able to get halfway through before quitting. The book would drag on, and on without moving the story forward. As much as I like his Leaphorn and Chee books I just could not get through this one.

Way too much background on the main character that did not appear to serve any purpose for the story.

I have really enjoyed Nevil Shute's novels over the years, so I thought his biography would be an interesting read as well as informing of his life. Boy was I wrong. This is more like a dissection of projects he was involved in. There were several chapters about his involvement in the development of an airship for the British government. And much complaining and speculating about how and why things went drastically wrong.

Then he started a period when he tried to start an airplane manufacturing company. I couldn't take anymore and quit. I am returning the book after slogging through a little more than half the book. Especially after I realized that I was not even listening, but treating it as background noise.

Overall, this is an epic novel covering a wide range of area, people, and time. It includes lots of hard science, which I enjoy. There is the epic story of colonizing a new land; Mars in this case. However, there were also times when the author stopped the storyline for extensive diversions into a character's thoughts that I found rather boring. This the reason I choose not to read anymore of Patricia Highsmith after returning a collection of her stories for the same reason.

While interesting, I did not find it interesting enough to consider the rest of the Mars trilogy.

I made it two hours into the book and felt like it was going nowhere. Maybe the author gets to the point later on but up to this point it was only a series of snippets of President Eisenhower's life and supposed attitudes. Mostly, I prefer history told as a story, not as a series of (maybe connected) details with no apparent coherent plan or imparting any useful information.

This might be a good book for someone doing research on President Eisenhower and his time as president. But not for me.

The narrator was doing a fine job for as long as I listened.
