This book literally gives me nightmares years after reading it. Please include a warning after so many GREAT books before it without this level of horror.

Historia
When Evangeline is sent to live in a small mill town in Northern England as a schoolteacher in 1871, she finds herself struggling to fit in with an unfamiliar culture. Raised with the high-class Victorian values and ideals of a sophisticated upbringing, she is unprepared for the poverty she finds in the gritty factory town of Smeatley, where the locals speak with a hard-to-understand Yorkshire accent and struggle to thrive with few resources or opportunities. Though she has no training as a teacher, she must prove herself successful before her grandfather will release her inheritance.

Reading how sad this book was nearly made me skip over it. I'm so glad I didn't. Those that proclaimed its sadness obviously did not finish it. So many lessons and fine stories. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I bought this in paperback for my mother because she doesn't like audio books. It's such a wonderful twist on time travel romance, one off the most interesting I have read. I won't ruin it for you. Take a chance on this book.

Good story - writing and word choice needs work.
Revisado: 07-08-20
A good editor should have caught the 200 instances of hands trembling, color rising, and overuse of the word kid. That having been said, I enjoyed the book. Three generations are woven into a compelling story. Details are revealed throughout the book bringing all of the main characters together. The author should keep practicing craft.

Enough to keep me reading but...
Revisado: 09-14-19
I love time travel books and the Oregon Trail setting in particular. The author drug out the will he / will she aspect of this romance till it hurt. She overused clenched fists and jaws way too often. More than half of the story was the characters churning through emotions and reservations. That having been said, I did finish the book and enjoyed it. The story was engaging when the story was actually unfolding. The plot twists and turns were inventive. This author should take advantage of a good content editor and beta readers. (Peggy, keep writing!)

Historia
Midwife Kim Osterholzer ushers listeners behind the doors of Amish homes as she recounts her adventures answering God's call to the craft of midwifery. Kim chronicles her nine-year apprenticeship grappling with the nuances and idiosyncrasies of homebirth. She recounts the beauty and painstaking effort of those early years spent catching babies by the light of crackling woodstoves, oil lamps, and lanterns. Every birth enthralled her, whether it involved halting hemorrhages, sharing breath with tiny lungs, or bouncing through wild rides in ambulances.
