Historia
This astonishing new novel, calling to account the violence, virulent racism, and destruction of the land that fueled the so-called American Dream, points an accusing finger straight into the burning eyes of Uncle Sam. Here is the bloodied child of the Civil War and Reconstruction who dreams of recovering the family plantation. He becomes the gifted cane planter nearing success on a wilderness river when he gives in fatally to his accumulating demons. Powerfully imagined, prodigiously detailed, Bone by Bone is a literary tour de force as bold and ambitious as Watson himself.

Matthiessen writes in a genial way that kept me engrossed and wanting more. Not normally the subject matter I am attracted to but in this case it has led me to start reading Lost Man's River (I know I am reading a triology back to front). They couldn't have made a better choice than George Guidall as the narrator. He brings the colorful figure of Watson to life and also makes all the other characters sound as they should. You won't be sorry if you choose this book.

Historia
Towner Whitney, the self-confessed unreliable narrator of The Lace Reader, hails from a family of Salem women who can read the future in the patterns in lace, and who have guarded a history of secrets going back generations. But the disappearance of two women brings Towner home to Salem and the truth about the death of her twin sister to light.

Not quite as good as I expected.
Revisado: 10-25-08
I heard an interview with the author on NPR and it sounded as if this might be a great listen. I found the structure somewhat contrived and I didn't quite enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I usually like this kind of novel and perhaps I should listen to it again. A lot of 'he said, 'I said, 'she said' narrative which does not do well when listening to a book.

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Interesting book.

If you want a breathtaking listen and learn about Mormonism at the same time, this is a good one. It is thrilling, well written and gives insight into the following that call themselves Mormons. I am always on the look-out for something new with depth and this book ranks high on my list of recent listens that gave me what I what I look for. Other reviews give the necessary details.

Not spicey.
Revisado: 05-02-08
With a subject as interesting as the history of spice, this was unfortunately a bit of a dull listen. However the pronunciation of the reader was annoying at times especially with the Dutch words which could not even be recognized by a native speaker. Why not check with someone prior to venturing out on a project like this?

What happened to Book 8?
Revisado: 03-02-07
I join others in saying that is a very entertaining series with adventure, a little romance, plenty of humor and characters with lots of personality. As soon as I have heard the one (narrated by Rosenblat please)I am ready for the next Peabody adventure. You can imagine my disappointment that I cannot locate Book 8, The Hippopotamus Pool at Audible. Anybody know why?

Historia
What is it about humans that causes us to defy genetic programming and so often live in hope, despite all that's terrible about existence? In this audio program, Diane Ackerman shares what she has learned about human survival from working at a crisis hotline. Full of insight, drama, and self-revelation, her wisdom draws from all human knowledge - from the natural and social sciences to the insights of great artists - to show how humans, like animals, cope with stress, and to illumine the tenuous but gorgeous thread by which we all cling.

There is more to Ackerman...
Revisado: 03-28-04
I was not very impressed by this particular book, but know that Ackerman is a wonderful writer and her work would lend itself so very well to audio. If you enjoyed a book like "Salt" by Mark Kurlansky, then encourage Audible to bring some of Ackerman's other works e.g. A History of the Senses.
