According to Christianity, man is an enemy of God and does not seek him (Romans 3). This short work from Thomas Chalmers shows what is necessary to move one from a life of enmity toward God to one as a child of God. It is knowing, seeing, and tasting God as infinitely valuable. Human beings are creatures whose hearts, like nature, detest a vacuum, and so to expel the sin and selfishness in our hearts, we must fill them with something that is better and more satisfying - namely, Jesus Christ.

Chalmers admits and describes the loveliness of life on the earth while comparing the incomparable gloriousness of God and everlasting life with Him. Love for God expels love of the world that wants to rule my heart.
