Learned So Much
Revisado: 04-02-25
I’d never heard of Jessie Redmond Fauset before reading Harlem Rhapsody. Thank you for opening my eyes to her, her works and her influence on the many Harlem Renaissance writers I know well. I also appreciate the research that went into capturing the heart and significance of the time period and juxtaposing it with what African Americans outside of Harlem were experiencing. (Don’t know who prepared the discussion questions; I thought most were a bit weak and created my own for my book club.)

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Books About Animals - Always Good
Revisado: 03-22-25
This novel evoked all emotions and was just an all around good listen! I recommend it for all who like books where an animal or in the case sea creature is an integral character.

Predictable and Ended too Soon
Revisado: 03-14-25
ReShonda Tate Billingsley is a good author, and she did an excellent job of weaving the 4 stories together. However, over time her plot lines have become predictable, and this novel seemed to come to an abrupt end w/o resolution or justice for the lives of all the people who were killed. While I know the novel was not about them, they played pivotal roles in the lives of the main characters. I also hoped for a reappearance of Ollie Moss.

Historia
In Trinidad, in 1796, teenage Rosa Rendon quietly but purposefully rebels against typical female roles and behavior. Bright, competitive, and opinionated, Rosa sees no reason she should learn to cook and keep house - it is obvious her talents lie in running the farm she expects to be her birthright, despite her two older siblings. But as her homeland goes from Spanish to British rule, it becomes increasingly unclear whether its free black property owners - Rosa's family among them - will be allowed to keep their assets, their land, and ultimately, their freedom.

Surprises Along the Way
Revisado: 03-10-25
I enjoyed this novel because it was full of surprises. Each of the characters back-stories were so well written that you truly got to know them and all the unexpected circumstances that molded them and their lives. I also got to learn about Edward Rose, which made the book come more alive. The only reason I gave the overall score of four stars with because the book was a bit long and possibly could have been shortened by 50 or so pages.

Historia
Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.”

Historia
The Gardener Estate is one of the most storied and beloved places on the West Coast: a magnificent house in vast formal grounds, home to a family that shaped California—and fought hard to conceal the turmoil and eccentricities within their walls. And now, just as the turmoil seems buried and the Estate prepares to move into a new future, construction work unearths a grim relic of the estate's history: a skull, hidden away some fifty years ago.

Another Masterfully Written Memoir
Revisado: 08-25-24
Thank you for another masterfully written chapter from Mary Russell’s memoirs. In addition to the always intriguing Russell/Holmes storyline, this reader appreciates the time, energy and effort devoted to incorporating persons, places and events of historical significance during the time period. It encourages me to do my own research.
Any other time, I would give a Mary Russell memoir five stars. This time I awarded four stars because I did not care for the narration. I miss Jenny Sterlin, and while Amy Scanlon is an excellent narrator, her interpretation of Mary Russell seemed, to me, to be a bit off . She portrays Russell in a haughty, look-down—your-nose, GenXer manner, which is not the Russell I have come to know. I have enjoyed Scanlon’s narration of other novels but not this one.

Great Character Development
Revisado: 02-20-24
I always appreciate a novel where, when I finish, I will miss the characters. That is true of this novel. By the time I finished, I felt as though I knew them personally. Great character development. I hope there is a sequel.
