A wonderful story, very well done
Revisado: 07-10-23
I just loved this book, I will be getting the next one immediately. The main character is charming and clever, and a refreshing new kind of detective. Young but not naive, worldly enough not to frustrate a modern reader but not too cynical and not magically aware of modern forensics or investigative techniques. It can be a balancing act writing mysteries set in the past but Mary Miley pulled it off.
I hope to encounter many of the side characters again soon. The narrator was quie skillful and I hope she voices all the books.

Historia
Baron Valdemar and his people have found a temporary haven, but it cannot hold all of them, or for long. Trouble could follow on their heels at any moment, and there are too many people for Crescent Lake to support. Those who are willing to make a further trek by barge on into the West will follow him into a wilderness depopulated by war and scarred by the terrible magics of a thousand years ago and the Mage Wars. But the wilderness is not as "empty" as it seems. There are potential friends and rapacious foes.

Another disappointment from Mercedes Lackey
Revisado: 07-02-23
I really wanted to like this book. I have been a fan of Mercedes for decades. My copies of her older books are well loved, and I was eager to read about the founding of Valdemar.
I wish I hadn’t bothered. The story dragged on and on about nothing, just filling up the word count. She does that a lot lately. If this had been a print book I would have skimmed through it, instead I fell asleep to the droning on about nothing for like a week.
Also, I wanted to read about the first Companions, not barges. I don’t give a crap about barges. What happened to all her old books where events happened quickly and you felt like you’d lived a lifetime after reading just one part of a series?
Lastly, I don’t appreciate one bit the heavy-handed lecturing on and references to cultural goings-on in our world. Never before had Lackey’s possible current political opinions even crossed my mind while reading her work but in this book they were used as a cudgel on her readers. It completely destroyed any attempt at immersion in the story. Does she actually think people who fundamentally disagree with her are reading/listening to this fantasy book??? I am not the target audience for your condescending attitude, ma’am. And if you had climbed down from the high horse long enough to write a good story I might not be as pissed.
The narrator was boring but not terrible. Good pronunciation, cadence, etc. That’s more than I can say for some of the other Valdemar books.

Historia
Mrs. Hawkins, the majestic narrator of A Far Cry from Kensington, takes us well in hand and leads us back to her threadbare years in postwar London. There, as a fat and much admired young war widow, she spent her days working for a mad, near-bankrupt publisher (“of very good books”) and her nights dispensing advice at her small South Kensington rooming house. At work and at home Mrs. Hawkins soon uncovered evil: shady literary doings and a deadly enemy; anonymous letters, blackmail, and suicide.

A pleasantly told tale with a wonderful narrator
Revisado: 09-30-22
I’m mostly talking about the main character when I say “narrator” although the reading by Pamela Garelick is very well done. But it is the character of Nancy (Mrs Hawkins) and her first-person storytelling that stays with me long after the book is over.
Wikipedia says this book is a roman à clef, and that Muriel Spark took her revenge on a former lover turned stalker in the writing of it. That knowledge made the ending of this novel more satisfying to me so I’m passing it on.

Pronunciation issues persist, but story and voice acting are good
Revisado: 07-16-22
So now “collegium” is pronounced two different ways depending on the chapter, but my main complaint is how the female characters are voiced. I know it can be difficult for men to get the tone and pitch right but mostly I feel like it comes across here as attempts to be sexy, which is both completely unnecessary and grates on my nerves.
The storyline makes quite a bit of progress in this volume, more so than the others. More and more there are lengthy memory scenes that recall events in previous books and that completely interrupt the flow of the story. It would be nice to throw a couple sentences in when directly referencing things from prior books just in case the reader/listener has gone a significant time since the last book(s) but I am starting to feel like these scenes are so long because the author is padding the book length. That’s not something I ever thought I would say about Mercedes Lackey. I’m going to finish the series but this should have been a trilogy. A tightly written, far less repetitive trilogy.

Grit your teeth and get past the mispronunciations
Revisado: 07-12-22
The story is decent, I missed Valdemar and this was a good visit back to it in a new time period. I saw ahead of time that this series, Collegium Chronicles, is 5 volumes instead of the standard 3 so I didn’t really expect the story of the main character to go from start to finish within this one volume. I was satisfied with his progress and the ending made me want to get the next story right away.
That said, holy crap. The narrator does excellent voice acting but cannot pronounce basic English-language names or words. Liam is pronounced Lye-um as if he’s never heard the name before. Minutiae is pronounced by enunciating each vowel separately, and worst of all Collegium is said “college-ee-um” instead of coll-ee-jum.
And he calls Vanyel “vahn-yell” emphasis on yell. Like he’s never heard of Vanya or it’s variations in Russian.
I just pretend I’m listening to a talented alien actor who has mastered most of my particular human language. It works for me.
