Brilliant! Listen rather than read!
Revisado: 04-08-25
Doris Kearns Goodwin is first of all an exceptionally capable storyteller and historian. This book exquisitely illuminates the social and political history of the U.S. in the 1960's with everything relevant to today in 2025. The audio book is full of not-to-be missed archival clips. Friends please read this book, and remember me well for recommending it!

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Uplifting, redeeming, the fully realized next volume that convinces us that the times were changing, have changed, and that maybe the arc really does bend towards justice. We so need to believe in this previously untold part of the story….

Historia
New York, 1888. Gas lamps still flicker in the city streets, but the miracle of electric light is in its infancy. The person who controls the means to turn night into day will make history - and a vast fortune. A young untested lawyer named Paul Cravath, fresh out of Columbia Law School, takes a case that seems impossible to win. Paul's client, George Westinghouse, has been sued by Thomas Edison over a billion-dollar question: Who invented the lightbulb and holds the right to power the country?

Super fun
Revisado: 03-12-23
Love to learn about/ think about history, and history of science through the real and imagined unfolding. Moore is a thoughtful and creative storyteller. As the story progresses, Moore’s quotes from Jobs, Gates, Popper, Edison, Westinghouse, Tesla, and more link this to everything that has followed in less than a century and a half, When the tale complete, Moore, with respectful transparency distinguishes the real from the imagined. Johnathan McClain does an excellent job of bringing the tale alive. And the story of how scientific discovery is brought into daily life is an important one.

Historia
In first century A.D. Rome, Marcus Didius Falco works as a private "informer," ferreting out hidden truths and bringing villains to ground. But even informers take vacations, so in A.D. 77, Falco and his wife Helena Justina travel to Alexandria, Egypt. Before long the Librarian of the great library is found dead and Falco quickly finds himself on the trail of dodgy doings, malfeasance, and the lowest of the low - book thieves! As the bodies pile up, it's up to Falco to untangle this horrible mess and restore order.

Sorry - prefer Simon Prebble narrating
Revisado: 09-15-22
I love the series, but of the alternating narrators, Simon Prebble matches much better with my internal image of the Marcus Didius Falco character. For me, Christian Rodksa who narrates this one makes the character rougher, more disgruntled and misanthropic, rather than the fellow with a wry sense of humor and underlying affection that Simon Prebble conveys. One minor point if they have to switch authors - wish they could all agree how to pronounce names of people and places, correctly and consistently… Love to know how these decisions are made, and where the editorial guidance goes awry….

Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

This is now my all time favorite book
Revisado: 07-23-22
This book had me weeping, gasping, nodding in recognition, grateful, and ultimately hopeful. What’s it about - everything - life - past, present, and future. Please don’t be scared off or confused by the first chapters set in a sci fi future, 15thC Constantinople, and Edirne. Hang in there and it will soon make sense, and you will be much rewarded.

Historia
Rome, AD 71. Marcus Didius Falco is desperate to leave the notorious Lautumiae prison—though being bailed out by his mother is a slight indignity. Things go from bad to worse when a group of nouveau riche ex-slaves hire him to outwit a fortune-hunting redhead whose husbands have a habit of dying accidentally, leaving him up against a female contortionist, her extra-friendly snake, indigestible cakes, and rent racketeers. All the while Falco tries to lure Helena Justina to live with him.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Lewis does it again! A timely story well-researched, and compellingly told. A must-read about the public health system that we don’t have, and how capitalism and politics undermines science for the people, at every turn. Companion to Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine - this belongs on the reading list for Disaster Management, Business, Politics, and Public Health 101…

My favorite narrator
Revisado: 08-10-14
What made the experience of listening to Steve Jobs the most enjoyable?
Excellent, riveting story makes you cringe, cheer, and laugh out loud. And Dylan Baker made it sound so completely natural.
Have you listened to any of Dylan Baker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Baker's incredible narration of Steve Jobs made me want to listen to him again. Next I listened to The Grapes of Wrath! Nothing could be more different, and nothing could better reveal his versatility and incredible talent... Dozens of characters... inspired perhaps by the film with Henry Fonda... But then he does them ALL. I sure hope I like his choices because my next pick is going to be something random that I haven't heard of...
