That ending!
Revisado: 07-08-24
Loved this even though it was largely a retelling of book one. Getting to relive the first book was great! I love Poppy but her internal monologues can be a bit draining and over explanatory sometimes. I enjoyed that this cut a lot of those extras out. As far as new material it may not be much but the stuff that's there packs a punch! That ending, omg! I was not prepared but it was amazing. So ready for the next one.

eeeather!
Revisado: 01-19-24
Love the book! started with the FBAA series and this prequel was a welcome break before the war of two queens. That series has been great as well but the books have been dragging more and more with each installment. Transitioning to this was a great refresh and I cruised through it.
Loved the characters and loved the spice. I can't wait to continue on.
That all being said, I am a bit over Stina's narration. she has done well enough with the earlier books (still not my favorite but ok). with this one though I really just didn't like her take on Nyktos. The inflections just didn't seem right for the character and makes him sound way to pained/strained, especially with the spicy scenes. Those just sound way too over dramatic. Also, I started to notice that when she would pronounce "Eather" she wouldn't just say the word. It became a way more drawn out "eeeather". Which sounded a bit off and made me giggle when the word just kept coming up.

Better than most of it's hate
Revisado: 10-30-23
Love all the SJM books. This one def took me a bit longer to get into and I wouldn't say I am obsessed with it as much as the others. Overall, I did enjoy it. The Urban/modern landscape is interesting. The characters and flow of the story are a bit hit and miss at times but I see the potential.
This book felt like the world/plot/character building book. One you get through (with an exciting ending) to set you up for the rest of the series. I really started to notice the allies coming together at the start of the conference and I hope she uses this to grow a core group to follow in future books. On to the next one!
As an added note on the drugs, sex, and swearing: I honestly didn't mind any of this. I feel like it's more realistic for the setting and the characters. Sex scenes weren't her best writing though.

brutal at times but I enjoyed it
Revisado: 05-12-23
Came here because I heard this series gets a bit spicy and I was intrigued to check it out. The first book definitely did not disappoint! the whole thing was essentially another version of beauty and the beast mixed in a fantasy world of fairies. The chapters on the main characters living together and falling in love had more small time jumps than I would have liked, but you could still see the progression of their affections well enough. Not rushing through those moments though would have helped develop the characters a bit more.
There were some really brutal scenes of violence as well, even from the first chapter. For some, these could be a bit hard to get through, but they do paint quite a vivid picture of the darker more gripping moments. I often found myself completely lost in the story, waiting to hear what would happen next.
For the spicy stuff-its there, but definitely not overkill in the book. I have read other YA novels that were more graphic. That being said, I heard the next books step that up quite a bit, but this is just my take away of this one.

A SparkNotes story
Revisado: 01-19-23
I enjoyed the story-ish. It's filled with a lot of the fun, over-the-topness thats in the other books but I didn't like this as much. The story was difficult to connect with. The biggest challenge, to me, came from a 5 year time jump mid book. That threw me for a bit of a spin and from that point, the main character came off like a whole different person. She seemed extremely shallow and like a brat. It was hard to root for her. While there is ultimate reason for it, the story would have been better suited to show us at least a little more of her progression to that point. It also would have allowed for more time to build the character relationships. Something like that would have added a much needed depth to the story and made the conclusion more satisfying. As is, the book feels more like a SparkNotes summary of the story than the full thing.

not that bad
Revisado: 04-14-22
Reading all the reviews I was really geared up for the worst. After listening though, I don't think it was as bad as everyone made it out to be. There is merit to a lot of the common criticisms but it wasn't to the point I couldn't enjoy the story. The whole thing still sucked me in and there were moments I didn't want to stop listening. Out of all the criticisms, I think the one I agreed with the most is the voice performance of Rachel. It's just off and almost makes her sound weirdly giddy or smiling every time she talks. Was not a fan but overall, still enjoyed the story.
