Historia
Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Perennial favorite.... and new format to enjoy....
Revisado: 01-21-21
Folks keep asking old was I when I first discovered 'Dune'..... really young. How old are you now? really old. and yet, every time I revisit this book there are passages discovered, re-discovered, and with each era and life transition we experience, the story has additional perspective to offer for consideration. And I like that about this story. Recall, too, that Mr. Herbert did spend time in Washington, D.C., in diplomatic circles. For me that provided him insight into political workings, and as he looked back in history, so too could he look forward to the likelihoods, probabilities, and possibilities....... some might even consider that in a way, hi writings perhaps should warn the complacent.....

Historia
Witty, romantic and insightful, this novel retells the love affair at the heart of Jane Austen's Persuasion from the perspective of the suitor--Captain Wentworth. Written in the language of the era, Captain Wentworth's Persuasion re-creates the original style, themes and sardonic humor of Jane Austen's novel while turning the entire tale on its head in a most engaging fashion. Listeners hear Captain Wentworth's side of this tangled story while gazing into his thoughts and emotions.

Well... Captain Wentworth...... glad to meet you..
Revisado: 01-21-21
Admittedly, this perspective IS highly modernized compared to the genre of the day. Jane Austen would never have written such a racy account of the good Captain's perspective. Ever. And I mean EVER. Or even broached the subject of intimate relations even between married persons. That being said, I did find this book saucy and delightful.... I have already listened to it twice! And, I really enjoyed the post-script adventures they had, and starting their family. I am left satisfied, fulfilled in my wishes for a prosperous, loving, emotionally resilient future for them. Thank you, Ms. Jeffers.

Historia
Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan to keep himself free from the town's marriage-minded society mothers. He pretends to be engaged to the lovely Daphne Bridgerton. After all, it isn't as if the brooding rogue has any real plans to marry - though there is something about the alluring Miss Bridgerton that sets Simon's heart beating a bit faster. And as for Daphne, surely the clever debutante will attract some very worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable.

Just---- OK.
Revisado: 01-21-21
Shallow. Shallow. Shallow. I guess I am spoiled by other authors who have more depth. Narration seemed .... awkward. I even watched the episodes.... sort of.... I kept going to sleep. Sorry, folks, this series seems to be a hit for a lot of people.... but if it is not for you, don't feel badly.... it is just not writing on the level to which I am accustomed. Good luck with the rest, though.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Jane Austen is one of my favorite writers, and Rosamund Pike is now one of my favorite narrators. Her performances are dynamic, vibrant, lively, and it feels like she is in your room, reading to you. Borrow the Audible Escape version, but then treat yourself to purchasing this one with Ms. Pike narrating, because you will become a repeat listener.

Historia
In this Audible Exclusive production, Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) narrates one of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Sense and Sensibility. In this timeless tale of misguided romance and heartbreak, two teenage heroines must overcome the pitfalls of Georgian England’s high society in order to achieve the love and happiness they seek. The admiration that Pike has for Austen’s work is shown clearly through this passionate delivery of Austen’s first published novel.

Rosamund Pike sets the bar for narrators..........
Revisado: 12-15-19
I am an obvious Austen admirer, and own several antique editions of her works, pre-library of Congress, a couple with illustrations protected on each side with special paper from their times...… so yeah...……. having listened to several audiobooks now, I am gaining an appreciation of, and preference for, narrators. Rosamund Pike is my current favorite, and it might likely help that she is also a highly regarded, and adept, actress. I also appreciate longer versions of works, with an especial presence for the unabridged editions. Borrow this one right away, and purchase it when you are able, for you will listen again and again. Brava, Ms. Pike, brava.

Historia
One of Jane Austen's most complex and mature works, Mansfield Park shows the writer at the top of her form, tackling the manners and customs of early 19th-century society with wit and irony that still resonate with readers two centuries after the book's initial publication. Flo Gibson's compelling narration gives perfect voice to the trials and tribulations of Fanny Price, sent at a young age to live with her rich relations.

OH.... my....... the narrator
Revisado: 12-15-19
Mansfield Park is one of my favorite Jane Austen works, and I was excited to find an unabridged audiobook edition...… but the narrator is someone I will never again listen to...……… it was like listening to an amateur grandmother who was also trying to imitate the voices and various accents of the characters, and not doing a very good job at it. I guess, for a free borrowing, I tolerated it long enough to finish the book, but I would not be purchasing this edition. Darn shame, too, because I prefer unabridged works wherever I can find them. By all means, give this edition a listen if you want an unabridged rendition.... but do not expect a high quality performance. Sorry, Ms. Gibson.
