Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

A Truth Hard Won
Revisado: 12-17-21
We should all be grateful to the author for her amazing perseverance and her willingness to tell the story. We who live in a mostly free world should never take it for granted, as I feel we often do.
I was particularly interested in her take on how propaganda makes it difficult for people to think their own thoughts and how hard it is to unlearn the falsehoods. this seems very relevant in our Western world today.
Worth every minute of your time and I hope that when you're done you will as I plan to do share this book with others.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

For a book club. in the end, just a bunch of lost people. I guess there was a morality tale here, but it didn't move me.

Edie is stumbling her way through her 20s - sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage - with rules.

No One to Like
Revisado: 08-25-20
I felt like the writer's impeccable details were lost on three highly dislikeable characters with a story that makes no sense. The protagonist is so full of self loathing that I felt like she was mentally I'll and being exploited by the author. The hypersexuality was disturbing without the character realizing how demeaning her sex life was. I hope the author uses her talents to create characters and stories that are relatable to readers.

Historia
Mindf*ck goes deep inside Cambridge Analytica’s "American operations", which were driven by Steve Bannon’s vision to remake America and fueled by mysterious billionaire Robert Mercer’s money, as it weaponized and wielded the massive store of data it had harvested on individuals - in excess of 87 million - to disunite the United States and set Americans against each other. Bannon had long sensed that deep within America’s soul lurked an explosive tension. Cambridge Analytica had the data to prove it.

My jaw dropped while listening to the 1st chapter and stayed open to the very end. All citizens of the world need to understand how the combination of data technology and well organized forces such as the Alt-Right combine with unlimited money to do nothing short of breaking democracy.

Historia
Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature. Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career - the successes as well as the failures - to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action.

There is Justice After All
Revisado: 07-19-19
This book was one of the most hopeful things I've read in a while. It is an homage to our democracy and the beauty of the judicial system, told through stories that help make his points. The author, despite all the horrible things he's seen and prosecuted, can still see the beauty of our legal and judicial system and is proud to be part of it. I was hesitant to read this book, thinking it was going to be another political hack book, but it's just the opposite. It's about what is right in America.

Revisado: 03-19-19
In our current political climate, everyone should listen til what life is really like inside the FBI. I am grateful to have the men and women who protect us do their job, and I am sorry that politics has entered into their lives in the rude way that it has.
I didn't have much of an image of Andrew McCabe before I listened to this book, but he strikes me as not only a truthful person, but an unsung hero.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.
