After listening to every book in the series, neither my husband nor I could get through the previous one. I thought I would give Box one more try. As soon as he digressed to bit coins and Wyoming politics, I bailed and returned the book - a rare occurrence for us. I don’t listen to CJ Box for current events.

Should be required listening

Woodward said he only edited out some repetitive material. Find that hard to believe because Trump only speaks in stock phrases and he doesn’t have many of them. Enormously repetitive because that is Trump.

I previously listened to the book Rage which used material from these interviews but Woodward is right to say that it does not have the same impact as hearing the original transcripts.

Ugh!

I have listen to all of the Joe Picket series available on Audible and was so looking forward to this book as an escapee from our current reality. I did not need the politics in this book. I also find the story lacking flow. Even David Chandler seems uncomfortable with it and his usual great character portrayals feel off key. Overall just a so-so book.

Doesn't really work

If you already know the Dick Francis novel, you can make sense of the broadcast but it feels very shallow. If you do not know the novel, you will have a difficult time even understanding the plot.

Why haven't these been discovered?

I have just finished off the series. Loved the characters and the readings were good. (First one was different reader than the rest.) if you appreciate the NW and native cultures, you will like these books.

Note. They all take place during the Vietnam Era. That was the conflict of my generation so I also appreciate it for that.

A Shame

Len Cariou is a wonderful narrator. The music overlay does his performance a real disservice. An occasional piece of music at chapter breaks is fine. The continuous background is an uncomfortable distraction and makes it harder to listen to the dialog. Bad idea, Audible.

Living History

I have been an adult for this entire history. Some I had forgotten. Some I never knew about. It was a combination of reminders and enlightenment for me. I just recommended it to my 24 year old grandson. I am curious what his reaction will be.

No One to Like

You can cheer on heroes (Harry Bosch) or villains (John Rain) and then there are the books where it is hard to like anyone very much. This is one of these. It could have been 10 hours shorter if Bolton had stuck to oval office events instead of pontificating on his own world views. Further, it is so egocentric that 10 years from now when this horror has hopefully faded from memory you will be hard pressed to understand the roles of the supporting characters.

Not being a fan of Fox I was pleasantly surprised by Chris Wallace's total performance the writing and delivery. His father would be proud.

It was more like listening to 1950's radio than an audible book. I grew up on radio but have somewhat lost the listening knack. It was challenging to listen to and required concentration to follow the characters and plot. It was an interesting retro experience but would not substitute it on a regular basis for good audio book readings.
