Historia
Given the fever-pitched controversies about evolution, Adam and Eve, and scientific evidence for the Flood, the average person might feel intimidated by the book of Genesis. But behind the heady debates is a terrific story—one that anyone can understand, and one that has gripped people for ages. If you are not a Bible scholar but want to be able to listen to Genesis and understand its big picture, this brief, witty book is the guide you've been waiting for.

Love the book-where's the study guide?
Revisado: 08-10-22
I've read multiple books by Pete Enns and/or Jared Byas-learned from and enjoyed every single one, including this one. But after downloading on my phone and listening to it on a couple of LONG driving days, I wanted to go back and listen again with my bible open and the "study guide" mentioned in the title. So here I am in my library on Audible.com to discover there is no downloadable PDF for this book. There is NO study guide if you buy the Audible version. Would it really be that hard to include what is touted as the feature of this edition for those who, by preference or by need, do a lot of our "reading" by lilstening? Yes, there is certainly much to be learned by simply listening to the book. Yes, both Pete and Jared are easy to listen to. But I bought this book for the book AND the study guide. Very disappointed.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Excellent book, terrible narration
Revisado: 09-14-21
As a post-evangelical, this book provided context for much of my experience over the past 50 years. But it was in spite of the narration. I have never struggled so much with an audiobook. Horrible prosody! About halfway through, I had a hunch about why the narration was so choppy, which was confirmed when I downloaded a Kindle sample. There are many terms snd phrases on quotes throughout the text. EVERY time the narrator gets to one of these words or phrases, she pauses ( you can almost envision her making air quotes). There is also a less conspicuous pause at the close quote.
I will probably buy the Kindle version, partly to re-read without the distracting narration, and partly to check out the numerous footnotes that can't be included in an audiobook.

terrible speaker
Revisado: 05-08-21
Cadence and intonation are anything but relaxing. Feels like the speaker is trying to rush through each sentence. the background sounds are OK, but I had to stop because the speaker's style was so irritating.

Second time around was a lesson
Revisado: 12-16-20
I read Herland for a sociology class in the early 80s. I recalled the story this fall and grabbed it on Audible as an antidote to the election rhetoric. Maybe I'm just older snd wiser, but I no longer find Herland interesting.
At first it was the references to savages. OK, it was written over 100 years ago. If I could get past this to enjoy Downton Abbey, I could grit my teeth and keep listening.
But then there's the assumption that the highest calling of women is to be mothers. Maybe Herland was radical when it was written, and considered feminist when it was republished in 1979, but "motherhood is all" is not feminist.
But the last straw, and when I stopped listening was when I finally recognized the eugenics basis for the "utopia" that is Herland. But it was a lesson to me that I got about halfway through the book before I recognized that clearly.
The book is worth listening to if for no other reason than to recognize how attractively racism and eugenics can be packaged. For that reason I gave the story 3 stars. Otherwise I'd give it one. The performance is excellent.

Historia
We spend a shocking 43 percent of our day doing things without thinking about them. That means that almost half of our actions aren’t conscious choices, but the result of our non-conscious mind nudging our body to act along learned behaviors. How we respond to the people around us; the way we conduct ourselves in a meeting; what we buy; when and how we exercise, eat, and drink - a truly remarkable number of things we do every day, regardless of their complexity, operate outside of our awareness.

Excellent summary of current habit science
Revisado: 02-20-20
I'm an occupational therapist. I get tangled up in or meddle with habits daily--the habits of my patients. So my interest in habits is both professional as well as personal. When Duhigg's "Power of Habit" was published, I listened to it on Audible, then bought the hardback and the Kindle version. I've read lots of different journal articles on habit science. All left me more informed, but the information felt pretty fragmented. So when I found out that a leading habit scientist had written a book for laypeople on habits, I had to have this book.
Understanding habit draws on research from neuroscience to psychology to behavioral economics. Habits are not what we think they are, Wood takes the research, the anecdotes and the myths about habit and synthesizes them into a readable-or listenable--whole. I've read the negative reviews from folks who wanted a self-help book without having to wade through the science. Well, there are plenty of other books that do that. But understanding that our "habit self" operates differently is key to changing habits. Appreciating the science at least makes the habit self more understandable.
Wood is a obviously not a professional narrator, but her narration is far better than most other author-narrated audiobooks I've listened to-or struggled to listen to. I do agree with a reviewer who suggested a summary at the end of each chapter. The chapters are dense with information. Chapter summaries would improve readability and make it easier to refer back to key concepts.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in habits or habit science. I already have the hardback and am about to order the Kindle version. For my OT colleagues, this should be a fundamental text for every occupational therapy educational program and for every practicing occupational therapist.

Historia
Throughout the 10 stories in You Think It, I'll Say It, Sittenfeld upends assumptions about class, relationships, and gender roles in a nation that feels both adrift and viscerally divided. With moving insight and uncanny precision, Curtis Sittenfeld pinpoints the questionable decisions, missed connections, and sometimes extraordinary coincidences that make up a life. Indeed, she writes what we're all thinking - if only we could express it with the wit of a master satirist, the storytelling gifts of an old-fashioned raconteur, and the vision of an American original.

Compelling!
Revisado: 11-14-17
I live in North Carolina. I do home visits with people all over the socioeconomic spectrum. Even though it's 2017 and not 1960, this book resonated in many ways. I listened to the book while driving between home visits. Sometimes I hated to turn it off to enter a client's. Other times I had to stop the player as it was too intense to listen and drive simultaneously. Well written, compelling characters and plot. A lesson in history as well. Highly recommend!
