So-so book, terrific reading

Total
4 out of 5 stars

While the mystery here is lukewarm, the writing is funny and the narration is *really* funny, with the reader truly relishing the differences between the characters while never overstepping the story.

Tense in a good way

5 out of 5 stars

This one is a great match between book and narrator. The heroine is smart and tense and complicated and doesn't scare easily--but when she DOES get spooked, so do we. The narrator's effects are subtle, and she does a terrific job of conveying the foreboding tone. Even walking down the street in bright sunshine, I had to turn this one off sometimes, so convinced I became that something was going to tap me on the shoulder!

I'm with Betty, above

I'm a big fan of Patterson, but this one felt more like really bad James Michener, with enormous chunks of historical information and teeth-grindingly laborious, evenhanded dispensation of opinions about Israel and Palestine delivered in the form of laughingly unbelievable dialogue. But I'm giving it two stars because I only made it through the first two hours before giving up.

good, but awkward mix of studio and live

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Another reviewer prefers Sedaris's live recordings but I have to say that the two live segments here are rather grating, a little heavy on the "knowing laughter" factor. And the transitions from studio to live are jarring. Still, awfully funny.

Awfully solipsistic

1 out of 5 stars

The horrors of this boy's adolescence are only matched by his complete lack of interest in understanding them, and if *he* doesn't care, who should I? The book is fun to listen to in a sort of look-at-that-train-wreck kind of way but Burroughs seems awfully full of himself, and embarassing so in the way he has the other characters tell him (and us) how creative and gifted he is.
