Best books, poor narration

I love the books themselves and the Librivox recordings by Karen Savage are by far the very very best. The only problem, there is not a recording of Anne of Windy Poplars in that flavor, so I ended up getting this set. The English accent is really too much for Anne of that era, but could be tolerated except there are many broken places in the reading where her inflections stop a sentence, then start again and truly end the sentence, but it leaves a broken feeling to it and can be hard to follow. Also, the books are not separated, the entire thing runs together up to nearly 300 chapters, so if you want to read a certain book it can take a few minutes to find it. And the other thing is there is no pause between chapters. Such as when chapter 4 is being read of a book it says something like ….and that was the last time five things happened five Anne was so wanting to find …. Etc - the word “five” the second time was to indicate the beginning of chapter five, but it is said so quickly and without pause before or aft that you feel it is part of the sentence and you get discombobulated. Anne read badly is of course better than no Anne at all, but it really does affect how the characters are built and played out. And by all means, please do not watch Anne with an E - such a totally bash of the beautiful storyline that Lucy Maude Montgomery gifted to us! The Sullivan movies will give you the correct vibe with all the good morals, and even though they condense and change the story lines, they stay TRUE to the characters.

“F” bombs killed it

I like the concept of this book. Have lived it. And thought this would be a great refresher. The frequent use of the “f” bomb just made the whole book lose validity for me. I agree. We are too soft. But nasty talk doesn’t make us tougher. Draw a line in the sand and don’t cross it. Refuse to let yourself go there. Don’t do things just because they are popular (like using this word repeatedly) - hold yourself to a higher standard.

After second “f” bomb I was out….

Why do I get rooked into these titles? I can’t believe I gave several hours of my life listening to this……I admit it draws you in, but really, what is the point of listening to something like this? It is like reading a tabloid - which I have never done. And after the second “f” bomb was dropped, I could not keep listening - I was finally shaken to my senses and realized I have better things to do. The family suffers loss after loss - but really, there are so many other losses before the deaths……the men are notoriously unfaithful to their wives, have Several women on the string at all times, even right in front of their wives!!!, their wives do things to try and forget what is really going on, the matriarch father has a lobotomy preformed on his oldest daughter because she is “different” and she ends up mentally retarded because of the action - sent away for 30 YEARS to live with nuns and not allowed to return to their family home until the father has died……just horrible. Nothing inspiring. Zilch. Maybe another book would sing their praises or inspire - but this one does not.

Too explicit

There's nothing worse than listening to what you think is a clean story, only for it to abruptly go into a boy fondling a girls breasts. I mean really, it is WAY PAST TIME for humans to stop thinking it is ok for men to treat women like they are merchandise - and for authors and publishers to think they need to include such trashy concepts to be popular. Love can be a beautiful part of a story without such explicit descriptions, and the electric charge felt from a faint hint at love is far greater than explicit descriptions. It is also way past time for books to not have some type of rating - movies have had ratings for so long, that it makes you wonder really why books do not. At the least, Audible, could you not please make some system that would warn purchasers what they will be listening to? I will be returning this book.

Please get Karan Savage to narrate

I had been looking for the Windy Poplars to complete my Anne series, but this version is rather hard to listen to and follow along. The narrator uses "voices" for different characters - but the voice she uses for Rebecca Dew and some of the other female characters are distinctly male - and her children's voices are squeaky - it would be better just to read it straight through in one voice I think, as this was very hard to follow. I love the stories and hope that some day Karen Savage will narrate this Anne book too. Karan's narrations of the other Anne books just draw you in, hold you captive, and let your heart fall in love with each of the characters - seeing them each one so clearly from the true personalities that Lucy Maude Montgomery had given them. Perhaps Audible can convince Karen Savage to have mercy on us all and give us the splendid gift of narrating Anne of Windy Poplars. Please search out the other Anne books that Karen narrated - you will not be disappointed!

I love Kate Merrick!

I sat at the table holding this book out at arms length and said to my husband, "I love Kate Merrick, she's my friend." He got a quirky grin on his face and said "is she?" At which I gave a hearty resounding "Yes!" Even though I've never met Kate, and she doesn't know me, she has been my friend through this book - walking me out of bitterness back into a place of laughing with joy. And even though my loss was not as great as hers, my bitterness was probably more (I'm petty like that). But Kate had me at "you can throw this book across the room if you want too" (sorry Beth Moore, I admit I have chunked a book or two) - but Kate said it best - "but go pick it back up, because Jesus is worth it." Yes. He is. And I'm glad I picked it back up (I picked yours back up too Beth), and kept reading and kept going, because that's what faith is really all about - keeping going even when it seems ridiculous to do so. Thank you Kate for the gift of laughter and for opening your story and reaching out your hand and saying come along girl, there's joy to find! (ps, I have both the print copy and the audio version, and have also gifted quite a few copies - I love the way Kate writes and her story is both tragic and beautiful and she is so gracious to let us into those places and share how she walked through grief to the other side.)

I really enjoyed this book - have never seen their show, as we don't have cable, but it is so much of what great stories are made of - and helps us realize that so many of us are having amazing lives, even if they never do get to the tv level - inspiring, encouraging, and family friendly - so no crude surprises! Thanks for sharing your story Chip and Joanna!

The "f" bomb? Really??? In this time period?

When reading a period book you kind of feel safe from this terrible use of language, but it seems this writer spanned time and took up modern language and ruined his book. I was enjoying it until then. Now I want to return it. Please help return the "f" bomb to its rightful place at the scum of society - I for one will not defile myself by becoming numb to the usage of this awful word.

There were so many "likes" in this book - everything happened "like" something - like John travolta, like something doing this, like something doing that. It was quite long to listen to and really was pretty predictable and drawn out - like something incredible was going to happen but it never did. Love Comes Softly, Jane Eyre or the Anne of Green Gables series are all super listens, as is Newton and Polly!
