Historia
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

One sided and no battle descriptions
Revisado: 02-21-23
I gave up after 12 hours as the biased opinion of the author simply became too much. An example is where he dismisses the English victory at Trafalgar as being irrelevant, which is a pretty big call. Plus there is almost zero description of the battles themselves. Don't expect to learn anything about Austerlitz, Waterloo etc etc.

Historia
The Normandy landings that took place on D-day involved by far the largest invasion fleet ever known. The scale of the undertaking was simply awesome. What followed them was some of the most cunning and ferocious fighting of the war, at times as savage as anything seen on the Eastern Front. As casualties mounted, so, too, did the tensions between the principal commanders on both sides. Meanwhile, French civilians caught in the middle of these battlefields or under Allied bombing endured terrible suffering.

Fantastic
Revisado: 01-12-21
I have read all of Beevor's books and this one didn't disappoint, as meticulous as his other books and also well paced. The narration by Cameron Stewart was also excellent. I would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in World War 2.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

Wonderful narrator brings it alive
Revisado: 01-12-21
The story is well-known (and excellent), so no comment there, but the narrator really did it justice. He carried off the various characters perfectly and made it an easy listen. I had intended to listen to this in the car with the kids on the way to school, but they lost interest fairly early on - perhaps more suited for children in their mid-teens than pre-teens.

Historia
The Great Boer War (1899-1902) - more properly the Great Anglo-Boer War - was one of the last romantic wars, pitting a sturdy, stubborn pioneer people fighting to establish the independence of their tiny nation against the British Empire at its peak of power and self-confidence. It was fought in the barren vastness of the South African veldt, and it produced in almost equal measure extraordinary feats of personal heroism, unbelievable examples of folly and stupidity, and many incidents of humor and tragedy.

Gripping story of the Boer War, excellent narrator
Revisado: 01-12-21
As a South African I naturally had some knowledge of the Boer War (most of it probably gained while sitting bored in a history classroom at school), however I always felt I knew only a small fraction of the true story. Byron Farwell's book was the perfect antidote to my lack of knowledge.
The book is well written and well paced and never felt dull or stretched. He provides details of both the politics and the military side of the war (and pre-war), which go well together. He also addresses the more contentious elements of the war methodically and what seems to be reasonably fairly. He certainly displays considerable respect for both sides of the war and leaves you feeling that he too feels like this was a war which should never have been fought. Although I am South African, my grandparents on one side are British, so I have no preconceived views on who was in the right or wrong, however after finishing the book I couldn't help but feel sympathy for the Boers, who went through a terrible time and displayed incredible fortitude and courage. I would readily recommend the book to anyone with even the vaguest interest in the war or history in general.

Worst narration ever
Revisado: 01-24-19
This book was so disappointing for just one reason - the narrator. He was terrible. Imagine a narrator who reads the book in a flat monotone with no inflection, thus is Blood Song. A truly wonderful book absolutely butchered by the narrator. Do yourself a favour and buy the physical book.
