Historia
1899: A dinner party hosted by Ella King at her magnificent Gothic-inspired cottage, Kingscote. Ella's son staggers in, obviously inebriated, and the family's butler is found pinned against a tree beneath the front wheels of Philip's motorcar, close to death. At first, the tragic tableau appears to be a reckless accident - one which could ruin Philip's reputation. But when Emma later receives a message informing her that the butler bullied his staff and took advantage of young maids, she begins to suspect the scene may have been staged.

Another fabulous story!
Revisado: 04-08-25
Thankful to have Eva Kaminsky back for this reading, although Lauren Ezzo has improved drastically from her first narration. As always, the story is engaging and the characters are well-developed. The end is never quite what you’ve guessed and I love that!

Historia
After a disappointing year as a society columnist for the Herald and staying with her more well-heeled Vanderbilt relatives in New York City, Emma has returned to the stately mansions of Newport, Rhode Island, more determined than ever to report on hard news. But for now she's covering the social event of the season at Ochre Court, a ball designed to showcase Cleo Cooper-Smith, who will be literally on display. Modern electricity will allow her to truly shine. But then the ballroom is plunged into darkness. When the lights come on, Cleo sits on her throne, electrocuted to death.

Still keeps you guessing
Revisado: 04-02-25
These stories continue to keep my interest and guessing until the end. The narrator has improved and uses more inflection since her first recording of the previous book.

Historia
Emma's job is to take note of the real players off the field—Newport's well-bred elite. But the fashionable façade is breached when a woman demands to speak to the wife of Senator George Wetmore—until she is escorted off the grounds by the police. The next morning, police detective Jesse Whyte asks Emma to meet him at the Wetmores's Bellevue Avenue home, Chateau-sur-Mer, where the senator's wife, Edith, has mysteriously asked to see her. Upon entering the mansion, Emma is confronted with a crime scene.

Another fantastic story
Revisado: 03-30-25
I was sorely disappointed when I started this book and there was a new narrator. Eva Kaminsky brought the character to life and I grieved for two or three chapters over the loss of those voices. Well, I love these stories, the new narrator doesn’t quite do the characters justice.

Story is brought to life with the varying voices for the characters. Intriguing and well-developed mystery and love story. Sad this is the last in the series.

Historia
With her new husband George busy on a special mission for the British Museum, Frances has taken on an assignment of her own. The dowager Viscountess Wingate needs someone to sponsor her niece, Kate, for presentation to Queen Victoria. Frances—who understands society’s quirks and constraints as only an outsider can—is the perfect candidate. Kate is charming and intelligent, though perhaps not quite as sheltered as she might first appear. More worrying to Frances is the viscountess’s sudden deterioration.

Another fun episode with Frances and George
Revisado: 06-12-24
The author cleverly, weaves together, humor, and interesting characters to solve another mystery. I love that these books in the series are PG and don’t include inappropriate aspects. I can’t wait for the next installment when hopefully Francis and George finally get to go on their wedding trip!

Historia
Lina Meisel, a retired librarian in Florida, is reading the newspaper one morning when she freezes. Her eyes lock on a photograph of a book she hasn’t seen in 65 years - a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II - an experience Lina remembers well - and the search to reunite people with the texts stolen from them so long ago. The book in the photograph is one of the most fascinating cases.
