Historia
This is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have, what rights Republicans are trying to take away, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past.

Great subject - poorly handled
Revisado: 09-24-19
Great subject - poorly handled. The writing is good. The story is a mess, heading off in too many directions - sexual harassment, glitz, family life, teenage angst, young child angst, new mother angst, corporate political angst, suicide, murder mystery. None of it is developed well. The author didn't begin to plumb sexual harassment, it was just there - like a rock. The characters, mostly women attorneys, sometimes think and act like teenagers. I'm actually surprised that this book was published.

Historia
In 1944, newly married Copper Reilly arrives in Paris soon after the liberation. While the city celebrates its freedom, she's stuck in the prison of an unhappy marriage. When her husband commits one betrayal too many, Copper demands a separation. Alone in Paris, she finds an unlikely new friend: an obscure, middle-aged designer from the back rooms of a decaying fashion house whose timid nature and reluctance for fame clash with the bold brilliance of his designs. His name is Christian Dior.

Interesting subject, not handled well
Revisado: 05-07-18
The subject matter is great: Dior. The fashion industry. Paris after the liberation. The Paris art scene. But although the author occasionally plows into this subject matter, mostly the story skates along the surface. The most interesting subject is Dior. But we don't really learn that much about him. There's not a lot of depth or insight into his character. The main character of the story - a female journalist - is a conglomeration of traits, but not a believable person. There are some pornographic lesbian scenes that are awkward and unbelievable. There are some anachronisms. And the writing is not great.

I loved this book
Revisado: 08-30-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Strong recommendation. It's an ambitious, sweeping story of generations of Africans and African-Americans as their lives were affected and shaped through the slave trade, slavery, and slavery's aftermath over centuries in Africa and America. The author shows us continually reverberating echoes of slavery in her character's lives through the present. This is an incredibly powerful story.
What did you like best about this story?
The author has given us so much information, including much new information of historical and contemporary value. Basically, she's given me a new and important way of looking at contemporary racial issues in our culture. And ultimately, her message is positive and life affirming. I think about this book a lot, and will probably listen to it again.

Historia
Learn how to practice Zen in your everyday life. This book contains everything you need to know about Zen Buddhism to start using its wisdom in your daily life. Zen Buddhism is known for going beyond words, with the very specific purpose of catapulting the student toward the indescribable. Spiritual masters of the past have been able to leave their physical bodies and to walk the strands of space, sans corpus, in order to see their environment through nonphysical eyes. Some have been able to levitate their bodies.

Equates Zen with Scientology Practice
Revisado: 07-15-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There is very very little about practicing Zen in daily life in the book, and that discussion is odd.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The author discusses the history of Buddhism.
Did F. C. McAllister do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
There were no characters. The narrator is good.
Do you think Zen: How to Practice Zen Everywhere in Your Daily Life needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
This author draws parallels between Zen and Scientology. The author treats Zen and Scientology "clear"practice as being equal. I found this jarring, and In light of it, I wouldn't trust anything that this author writes about Zen.
Any additional comments?
Very disappointing, possibly dishonest..

Good story marred by narrator
Revisado: 09-08-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
On the plus side, this is an interesting, informative, and well written historical novel. On the minus side, the narration is peculiar, annoyingly accented, and inflected with a patronizing tone. I like what the author is doing, but will e-read, rather than listen, to other books in the series..
Any additional comments?
Too bad the narrator selection was so terribly off.

Historia
Born in the slums of Brooklyn, in the first year of the 20th century, Willie Sutton came of age at a time when banks were out of control. If they weren’t taking brazen risks, they were shamelessly seeking bailouts. Trapped in a cycle of bank panics, depressions and soaring unemployment, Sutton saw only one way out. So began the career of America’s most successful bank robber. Sutton became so good at breaking into banks, and such a master at breaking out of prisons, police called him one of the most dangerous men.

A Very Bad Book
Revisado: 11-11-12
Would you try another book from J. R. Moehringer and/or Dylan Baker?
I will never try another book from this author or from this narrator.
What could J. R. Moehringer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The story is jerky and implausible. The characters are cardboard cutouts, uninteresting, unattractive and often disgusting - but not in a good way. To me, gratuitous cruelty is unforgivable, and this book has gratuitous cruelty in spades. I finally stopped reading at the slaughter house scene during the cheering as they watched the slitting of the animals' throats.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Extremely insensitive to any subtleties in the material. Overly and inappropriately dramatic.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not really.
Any additional comments?
I'm amazed that this book found a publisher.

Revisado: 05-15-12
If you could sum up Rather Outspoken in three words, what would they be?
Wake up call!!
Have you listened to any of Dan Rather’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No
Any additional comments?
Rather is rooted in the great age of journalism, He crossed swords with powerful corporate and governmental interests in his attempt to get at the truth during the G W Bush administration, and he paid a heavy price. This is a great story. Rather is a great man and a great American.
