Had this jaded ER nurse close to tears
Revisado: 02-03-21
Wow, this short book was literally a brief summary of much of my everyday frustrations and a glimpse of how broken our healthcare system is. It's also sprinkled with specific evidence of how our government has failed to act appropriately during this pandemic. Although I can see how some may perceive this as a left point of view, it actually is based on factual events and statements, that are not taken out of context. Overall, a great read that gets you pondering just exactly how our nation got here and what on earth can we do now.

Historia
I'm an RN in the ER - strong, assertive, and capable, with a potent array of sophisticated equipment and medications at my disposal. Exactly one week from the day of my mother's funeral, an investigator from the Florida Department of Health shows up at the ER and informs me that I may be charged with a felony. Someone is making anonymous complaints that I'm practicing medicine beyond my scope of practice. I have no idea who or why!

A book that's hard to put down!
Revisado: 06-14-18
Throughout this book, I couldn't help but think of the phrase "you can't make this sh*t up." A statement uttered almost daily by my coworkers.
As an ER nurse myself, it was extremly easy to relate to the main character. There is always a fine balance between work-life-relationships. Within what seems to be a very short time, she's faced with major stressors in all three categories, hence the phrase.
In general, the plot was easy to follow and held my interest. The story included distinctly different aspects of this womans life, but came together with aspects of love, life, death, and happiness. The end of the book is a bit of a cliffhanger, yet you feel settled.
The only pitfall was the audio quality. Clearly there was forethought by the producer/author. There was a variety of voices and music in parts, giving it more substance. Yet in some parts it felt like the music cut off abruptly. Additionally, the entire book sounded echoey (in comparison to other audible books).
Overall, a book I'd recommend to not just to my coworkers but also my friends/family.

Historia
At fifty-three, Maggie Harris has a good marriage and two mostly happy children. Perpetually anxious, she’s also accumulated a list of semi-reasonable fears: falling air conditioners, the IRS, identity theft, skydiving, and airbag recalls. But never once did Maggie worry that her husband of nearly thirty years would leave her.

At first, eh, but then you just get sucked into it
Revisado: 06-06-18
For some reason the beginning of this story bored me. It sounded like a woman just going through a tough divorce, very real life. Then things started happening, good and bad. With the various turns I had to keep listening. The ending really pulled things together but left some things to the imagination.

True life nursing
Revisado: 06-13-16
I really enjoyed this book. As an ER nurse myself, I could relate so much with the characters from beginning to end. I do hope non-nurses read this book, along with nursing management. It summarizes much of the pitfalls to the profession and even gives suggestions as to how to improve things. It's also a magnificent book for nursing students. It certainly will help prepare them for the trenches! Lastly, we ER nurses do put things into perspective, it's how we cope. Having that bond with other nurses should be treasured and this book reminded me of this.
The one chapter that just didn't grasp my attention was about doctor bullying...maybe it's more of an OR/medsurg problem? Interesting none the less.
