Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

An important read

I had a hard time feeling sorry for the guy that made the bomb and accidentally blew up and killed a child. I stopped listening for a few weeks after that chapter and didn’t want to continue the book. My own son has PTSD and I can’t imagine him ever doing anything remotely like that. Then I heard Mr. Stevenson mentioned in my churches April 2021 General Conference and I decided to finish. I’m so glad I did.
This book makes you think, feel, and come to realizations. 2 days ago, I was contemplating this book while driving my 13 year old daughter home from school. A drunk driver plowed into a car in front of us going 80 mph in a 20 mph school zone. we were seconds away from my daughter being t boned by him.
The message of the book became very real. If that drunk driver had taken my daughters life, would I have shown him mercy? I’m not sure.
We have so much work to do within ourselves as well as to improve our criminal justice system.
It also made me realize what people are talking about when they say there is systemic racism. I have seen racism on a personal level with friends or relatives, but never have seen it at a systemic level.....systemic racism has never made sense to me, I’ve never been able to figure out what people are talking about!....aha! Light bulb moments! All of those wrongly convicted stories ( especially children) made me sooo angry!!!
It didn’t change my mind about abolishing the death penalty. But I didn’t know it was used so loosely in some states. I also didn’t realize it was used against children!!! 😡
However, I believe People like Ted Bundy need to be executed.
Great book. It stretched my thinking as well as my soul.
