I first read this story more than a decade ago and was immediately captivated, ultimately reading the entire trilogy. I was thrilled to discover the audiobook - thank you Audible for finally expanding the choices for additional languages.

I had high expectations for the audio version and these were met. The performance was well done.

One addition to the audiobook is music between chapters. In some ways this was a nice, creative addition. I wish, though, that it hadn't been at the expense of all of the great quotes that begin each chapter in print. I also wish the sound engineer had paid closer attention to the volume levels: without exception, the musical interludes were significantly louder than the spoken tracks. In fact, they were so loud that the constant need to adjust the volume became a distraction as well as a nuisance. Instead of the music enhancing the story as it very well could have done, it detracted.

Otherwise, this is a highly recommended story and performance.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Although I struggled with the performance, I did enjoy the story and the wonderful character of Jacky Faber. In some ways, the story was predictable, but it is redeemed by the endearing character of Jacky, her humor and antics.

What did you like best about this story?

One can't help but fall in love with Jacky Faber's character.

How could the performance have been better?

I am convinced I would have enjoyed the story considerably more if I had read the book instead of listening. While Katherine Kellgren is an accomplished narrator and has some fabulous performances, I found her performance of this story to be extremely distracting. Her accent for Jacky was terrible and so obviously fake and forced that it was grating. (This surprised me given that she'd lived in England and was surely exposed to real, albeit contemporary, accents typical of people in circumstances similar to Jacky's.) Her male voices made many of the male characters sounded like cantankerous old ladies. At times, it was very difficult to carry on listening. I persisted largely because of the positive reviews. The performance could have been improved with better accent work and more vocal range.

Was Bloody Jack worth the listening time?

The story is worth the time to read it. If one can get past the performance, the story is worth listening to.

Any additional comments?

If I continue with the series, I will buy the printed books instead of audio books.
