Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Historia
During the bleak winter of 1692 in the rigid Puritan community of Salem Village, Massachusetts, a group of young girls began experiencing violent fits, allegedly tormented by Satan and the witches who worshipped him. From the girls' initial denouncing of an Indian slave, the accusations soon multiplied. In less than two years, 19 men and women were hanged, one was pressed to death, and over a hundred others were imprisoned and impoverished. This evenhanded and now-classic history illuminates the horrifying episode with visceral clarity.

Engaging history
Revisado: 06-18-23
Aside from unwarranted speculations, such as the possible suicide of the Putnams, this seems to be a well researched history with a lot of detail I wish had been included in the discussions which were part of my youthful history classes.

Just what I needed with the sounds of home
Revisado: 02-15-23
I grew up with Mexican Spanish spoken around me, but never learned the language. Now, living on the border of Portugal and Spain, I decided for practical reasons to learn Spanish, also because I sometimes attend meetings held in a mix of Spanishes from Latin America (which I struggle to follow with intermediate Portuguese). These conversations are perfect as the comprehensible input I need now to improve. The voices and the storyline are quite engaging as well. I picked up the Kindle version to read, which I do with the audio recording as support. Wonderful!!!

Although in some parts the prose is too purple and the narration overdramatic, both sparkle in the final scene. Or maybe it was the tears in my eyes.

Historia
Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Their contributions have often shaped history and shifted the axis of power for later generations of women. And yet, unearthing their stories from the historical record has often been a challenge. In Powerful Women of the Medieval World, Professor Dorsey Armstrong will introduce you to 10 amazing women who played vital roles in the Middle Ages.

Completely engaging
Revisado: 05-30-21
Professor Armstrong is one of the most captivating history lecturers I've heard since my superb 10th grade teacher for European History. Some 44 years ago, that teacher spoke of many of the same figures, but followed the more familiar patriarchal telling of things, probably more due to the environment of the day than anything else, as she herself was not a woman to accept the non-meritocracy of a male-dominated world. Armstrong's talks are a welcome, refreshing update that inspires me to go back and explore the histories of some of these women further. And I do so love how she guts Abelard!

From tales of chivalrous knights to the barbarity of trial by ordeal, no era has been a greater source of awe, horror, and wonder than the Middle Ages. In handsomely crafted prose and with the grace and authority of his extraordinary gift for narrative history, William Manchester leads us from a civilization tottering on the brink of collapse to the grandeur of its rebirth, the Renaissance.

Appalling reading
Revisado: 04-04-21
I strongly suspect that this is a computer-generated reading. The pronunciation of foreign languages that I know is so bad that I often do not recognize the words. If this was, in fact, a human being doing the reading, then this person needs some serious remedial work.
