Historia
Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge.

needs trigger warnings
Revisado: 12-08-24
was expecting spooky stories centered around native American legends, which I got. but also a handful of stories of white people being horrible to natives, no spooky involved. these latter were the ones needing trigger warnings, such as loss of pregnancy, mutilation, and rape. there is only one sexually explicit story, just fyi. in general the stories were well written, and the narration was good. the final story is the only one I had to nope out of halfway through. the stories that brought the spooky were my favorites, the stories with no spooky at all I just found depressing. it just depends on what brand of horror you like.

all good till the final story
Revisado: 11-03-23
this was a delightful listen! there were a couple stories I knew, but most were new to me. my only quibble is that the final story, The Judges House is one that I heartily dislike, and so ended the listen on a sour note.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

hooray for cephalopods
Revisado: 04-07-23
this might be one of the best books I've heard on audible. I love that the octopus's chapters were read by a different narrator, esp how sardonic he was. it wasn't always easy to see how the disparate pieces of the story would come together, but they did, with a satisfying ending. the book was beautifully written and I will definitely recommend it.

Historia
After discovering just how filled with magic, intrigue, and adventure the parahuman world of being an undead American can be, Fredrick Frankford Fletcher did exactly what was expected - he became a certified parahuman accountant. Myths and legends, as it turns out, are not so great at taking appropriate deductions and keeping their receipts, and Fred is more than happy to return to a life others view as woefully dull, expanding his accounting business to cater to various monsters.

though I found the narrative rather pedantic, it certainly fit the personality of the main character. the stories were interesting and entertaining, and I look forward to hearing the further adventures of fred the vampire accountant.

Historia
Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.

a sobering look at the lives of the "canonical five" and what led them to a place where they became victims of violence. definitely a must listen for anyone interested in the Jack the Ripper murders.

a cozy murder mystery
Revisado: 08-26-22
a charming read/listen, though it was noticable that the story was adapted from a stage play. the narrative read like detailed stage directions. another review commented on use of the word "sucks" and hinting at child molestation to be not appropriate in an Agatha Christie story. it may have been added later to update the story, but it hardly detracts. very enjoyable overall!

Based on the popular research project Whores of Yore, and written with her distinctive humor and wit, A Curious History of Sex draws upon Dr. Kate Lister's extensive knowledge of sex history. From medieval impotence tests to 20th-century testicle thefts, from the erotic frescoes of Pompeii, to modern-day sex-doll brothels, Kate unashamedly roots around in the pants of history, debunking myths, challenging stereotypes, and generally getting her hands dirty.

interesting concept
Revisado: 08-02-22
As with most Holmesian pastiche, I found this not as good as the original. The performances were fine. and I particularly liked Billy Boyd as Colonel Moran, but the characters didn't feel terribly fleshed out beyond the good guys are bad and the bad guys are good. plus the solution was broadly hinted at near the beginning, so I felt I had it figured out long before the characters did.

Historia
To 10-year-old Jamie, his family has fallen apart because of the loss of someone he barely remembers: his sister Rose, who died five years ago in a terrorist bombing. To his father, life is impossible to make sense of when he lives in a world that could so cruelly take away a 10-year-old girl. To Rose's surviving 15-year-old twin, Jas, every day she lives in Rose's ever-present shadow, forever feeling the loss like a limb, but unable to be seen for herself alone.

a well written story, from the perspective of a ten yr old boy, and beautifully read by David Tennant. I was crying almost nonstop for the last couple chapters, which is awkward when you're driving to work.
