Grady Hendrix never disappoints. The other stories in the series were good, but this one stands head and shoulders above them all. My fave for sure.

Boring, predictable and the main character was beyond annoying. Like watching a really, really bad Hallmark Christmas movie.

So good. The title says it all! You have no idea what the complete truth is in this book. It's ambiguous to the very last word. This would make such a good TV series. If you like true crime, podcast formats and lots of twists and turns, you will love this!

Revisado: 10-25-24
What did I just listen to??? This was mindbendingly good! I'm still not sure what exactly happened, although there are clues all over the place and I think I need to either listen to this book again and take lots of notes, or get the physical copy and start annotating the hell out of it. It's part haunted house, part alternate realities, part sci-fi, with some cultish vibes thrown in and I just LOVED it from start to finish. Great narration and audio effects too!

Alfred Smettle is not your average Hitchcock fan. He is the founder, owner, and manager of The Hitchcock Hotel, a sprawling Victorian house in the White Mountains dedicated to the Master of Suspense. There, Alfred offers his guests round-the-clock film screenings, movie props and memorabilia in every room, plus an aviary with fifty crows. To celebrate the hotel’s first anniversary, he invites his former best friends from his college Film Club for a reunion. He hasn’t spoken to any of them in sixteen years, not after what happened. But who better than them to appreciate Alfred’s creation?

Historia
When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn’t believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee. Margaret is not most people. Margaret is staying.

Loved the premise and unique take on the haunted house trope. It was funny and moved along at a good pace. Likeable characters. Not a fan of all the gore at the end, tho. Great narrator, but I had to speed it up a notch.

Revisado: 09-09-24
I couldn't get into it. I love museums and dinosaurs and I thought this was the perfect book for me, but I quit listening maybe 20% in. If the story and/or characters don't grab me from the first few chapters, I just move on to the next listen. Maybe it gets better later, but I have way too many books to get to and no longer have the patience to plod through slow and boring chapters.

DNF
Revisado: 08-13-24
I tried, I really did. But I quit a little more than half way through. Life is too short and there a way too many good books out there waiting for me. This was sloooooow, boring chapters with maybe one interesting sentence that kind of keeps you going at first, filled with unlikeable, broken characters. This combination can sometimes produce an alchemical literary magic and create the perfect Gothic novel. This was not the case here. This was just bad all-around. I hate to DNF books, but I just can't, nor do I care enough about any of it to go on listening. And speaking of listening, the only way I could even stand to get to where I left off is by speeding up the narration. Excruciating experience.

It's like a very dark fairy tale that gets pretty grim and gruesome at times and revisits and retells old familiar stories. A bit long in places but, overall, enjoyable. Narrator is quite good.
