Good enough to finish, can't recommend
Revisado: 08-22-23
I was looking for a nice series since I'm currently waiting for at least 3 books to come out and really wanted to finish a series, found this one, decided to go for it and was not very excited to read this.
I read at least 1 book per week, fantasy, space, non fiction, fiction and some thrillers even. Mainly do fantasy since I often share my books with my kids when I feel appropriate.
Unfortunately for this author I'm coming off reading not just 1 great series "He who fights with monsters" best LitRPG I have read, 9 books in, and my 10 yo is obsessed with it as well. I found "The perfect run" different but also very fun book, if you are into video games or ever enjoyed an RPG, this game is relatable without the listing of stats. So found this seriously underwhelming, there was a good idea, bogged down by a listing of deities which vaguely could be related. A story where you do not feel anything for any of the characters, did not feel any developing, unless you count from very annoying to slightly less annoying 17yo to be growth. The book had some solids ideas but I felt it was really trying to WOW you by mentioning certain historic characters and by mentioning the eons or millenia ago, over and over.
This seem like they really try very hard to use all the known stories which showed great research but it was a lot of information that made even some of the space opera books seem simple at times.
I would only recommend this book to someone that is really into or study mythology and might get a kick out of hearing some of the gods that don't often get mentioned in the western world.
I really like American Gods due to the stories and the writing all which we do not get here.

This is my stop
Revisado: 05-18-23
I enjoyed the story initially but it grew tired for me, I liked some of the other Drew Hayes stories a lot better. I picked up a different series which I read 9 books (He who fights monsters) Litrpg, which only highlights how much more interesting other books could be, got back to this series and the dullness of the stories were even more noticeable, I still managed to read a couple more books but I'm done, even with the introduction of new characters, I find myself hoping for the books to end and it's no longer fun. still worth a read if at least for the first 2 maybe 3 books.

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London. In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt.

fine reading, slow story, poor characters
Revisado: 11-21-22
I have a problem with not finishing my books, I'm sure I'm not the only one. I read all types of books, fantasy, biography, selfhelp, kids book. Whenever I get to a story I have difficulty finishing, because I don't find it interesting I usually still feel the need to push through except a few times. I finished 2 books on the series but I would not be reading the third, not because it's boring but because I don't care for any of the characters enough to read another the last one, specially since I already bought it
The first book was interesting enough, I have read others with the same premise, I thought it was a rough start but plenty of room for the characters to grow. The problem was that the main character was boring, flat, young and he never develops, at least not enough on the first book, on the second book it seems that he learns from his mistakes and takes up working out and improving but he is fascinated with another character which made this more of a romance book, which I at times read, not my favorite but I read the books my kids read and this is what you find, the typical boy and girl like each other but are both too proud to admit it. This last the entire 2nd book, they just add murder to call it adult.
The female character I have the most issues with, they try to make it interesting, a thief that grows up in the streets, she might be powerful but you won't know it untill much later, but she is reluctantly self destructive, which makes for a good tragedy but this is not that, this is a started from the bottom story, except it isn't, the author wants you to know she is smart and clever and dangerous but she is only dangerous to herself and anyone that comes close to her since she is so self-destructive. I found her annoying to the point that when I actually cared I wished she would die so that the story might be able to bounce back.
So many aspects of this story I have a problem with I won't list them, just not able to suspend reality because if all the shortcuts.
Finally if you are interested on a series with multiverse read Twin born by J.S.Morin and if you liked the second book which was a very long book about a tournament read Superpowered series by Drew Hayes, that was a great coming of age, with characters that grow and develop as they experience adversity. Again 1st book was ok, I would not recommend since there was nothing great about this story except the idea of many worlds connected by the city of London, even this was not a new idea nor was it executed greatly.

I know now why they sell 4 books in 1
Revisado: 11-01-22
I read 5 books on the series, stopped caring 3 books ago. I have a tough time quitting a series and that is why I kept going. The series was funny at times but you are beating on the side of the head with lowbrow humor, so many poop, fart, pee, vomit jokes, that even when they raise the bar by adding racial slurs, rednecks, pedophiles, rape, it falls pretty flat and fails to amuse. I was at no point offended by anything on the 5 books, just bored and uninterested after the first 2, could not care what happened to the characters, they became increasingly more annoying and little to no growth was ever shown. Again if you are interested in a fantasy D&D series that goes on about feces and farts then read this, you will live it, if you interested on a good story I could recommend other books that do this way better.

Historia
Jonathan Lambshead stands to inherit his deceased grandfather’s overstuffed mansion - a veritable cabinet of curiosities - once he and two schoolmates catalog its contents. But the three soon discover that the house is filled with far more than just oddities: It holds clues linking to an alt-Earth called Aurora, where the notorious English occultist Aleister Crowley has stormed back to life on a magic-fueled rampage across a surreal, through-the-looking-glass version of Europe replete with talking animals (and vegetables).

Exhibition writing
Revisado: 02-12-22
This was quite the interesting read, coming from a 40 year old that reads a couple of books per week, ranging from nonfiction, biographies, scifi, fantasy and lots of YA and kids book since I like to keep up with my 9 and 12 yo children.
I originally read this hoping to find a book to suggest to my 12 year old but soon realized this was not it, I struggled finishing this book, it was very long which would be fine since we do series all the time, but unfortunately I never cared much for any of the characters or the story, you spend little time with any of the characters and even when you do, you never connect with them, the story would jump around plenty.
The imaginative nonsensical, almost funny but not really. I am curious about the author since the scenarios and the characters, a combination of creatures, animals and objects, were really wild and this is why I feel like this was a professional writer pushing to see how far he could go, no editing and just practicing to see how crazy things could get, again I'm not the target audience and if you are a fan of this author I'm sure you would love his book, however for my introduction to his writing I was not impressed, I will try a different book and see how it goes.

Very interesting book, yet difficult to recommend
Revisado: 08-18-21
This book was great, IF you are into philosophy, enjoy thinking about concepts more than action, characters and the actual plot. This book focuses on some very interesting ideas and the author showcases those ideas in a great way, there's a dialogue, several and it's all done in a captivating way. However the book is very slow, when thinking about the first meaningful event, I had to think about it and then consider if the opening of a door would be it, that was almost 200 pages into the story.
If you want a strong plot, great character development or action this is not the book for you, if you want to read about the ideas of reality and existence of time and other worlds
Again I truly enjoyed the book and will probably read it again, I don't normally do, there is lots to digest here, I will definitely pick up others book from this author.

Slow start
Revisado: 06-25-21
I had a tough time with the first half of the book, I truly enjoyed Columbus Day and stuck with it for 4 books, eventually too much of the same got to me and lost interest, I was hoping to get some of the magic the author delivered on that book here, the start was extremely slow and convoluted, even with my background knowledge of the story, it got to be confusing and I just did not care for the minutes of long political explanation about why something was happening. The book did get much better at the midpoint, when something actually started happening and then you see why you might want to pick up the next book or so. I'm still not sure I would. Wanted to like this, I will keep searching maybe come back to it later on.

Good enough to read, not enough to ...
Revisado: 09-04-20
care what happened at the end with any of the characters.
It was an interesting enough story, lots of pop culture nerdy references, profanity , powers and some love, like checking boxes on your favorite books but it was done in a way that was not for me. I could not get on board with the lack of character development. You are told many times over that the main character is smart and brilliant but he doesn't show it, you are told he is.
This books spends maybe 70% of the time introducing the word and explaining how things work. You then have 1 chapter with an ex then another with the best buddy and the end of the book happens.
At the end I could not care if any of them lived or died, The author wrote many other books on the series however there is no aspect on the first book that would entice me to read the next installment.
