Story - YES! Narration - NO!!!
Revisado: 09-21-20
First, I received this free from the author. This review is my honest opinion of the audiobook and story.
Science-fiction, magic, aliens, and a dystopian world. A good mix of genres, what's not to love? Survival, friendship, and finding hope when all seems dismally dark.
I enjoyed the story. However, it took me FOREVER to get through this audiobook, nearly a year. The narration was far too monotone. I almost gave up several times wanting to go and just "read" the book, but I persevered. My recommendation would be to go READ rather than listen to the book. I will be looking for more books from Drew Briney. But, if Julian Pearson is the narrator, I'll reach for the ebook instead.

Could not finish
Revisado: 04-11-18
I received a free book code for this audiobook via Book Boom for my honest review.
In my rating choice, I had to select a rating as well for Overall and Story in order to leave my comment here on step 3, so I chose middle ground with 3 stars for those choices which is truly unfair to the author since I just could not finish. I've tried several times over the past 3/4 year to continue this book without succeeding. The narrator's cadence was simply too irritating to try and follow. Not her voice, but her rhythm. Tap your finger on the table quickly to the count of 3, then pause and repeat, that will give you an idea of the narration rhythm. She would speak fast, then slow, then loud and then a mumbled whisper, with the slow being a rather quick slow if that makes sense. I thought maybe it was the way she read this book, but after checking samples of other books Yau narrated they're much the same, some less so. I will look to the written form of this book to finish.

Guilty pleasure for when I need a cheeky smile.
Revisado: 11-13-17
Fluff? Sure. But what fun it is to devour! Whenever I need a lift in my spirit or a good laugh I turn to Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, 34th in line for the throne aka Georgie. Her Royal Spyness starts off the series and has everything one needs to chase away the fog, blues or whatever might be ailing you. Katherine Kellgren knocks this out of the park with her narration! There are no deep mysteries, or life changing quotes, etc. Just good spirited fun, a few tongue in cheek characters to add the spice, and one very naive royal.
A little bit of "royal" Nancy Drew mixed with a wee bit of female Sherlock Holmes tossed with a heaping amount of plucky naive innocence entering the cruel real world. Georgie faces each dilemma she encounters with a charm most endearing.

Revisado: 08-16-16
Any additional comments?
I made it through about 1/4 maybe it was a 1/3'd of the way, right at the Temple of the Lily goddess. Green is a 12/13 year old girl at this point and is sexually abused. I'm sorry - at that age ANY sexual description - action - writing is ABUSE. I made it through the abominable physical beatings in the first part of the story, becoming less inclined to finish the book and then --- the temple. NOPE, I'm done.
As far as Katherine Kellgren's performance, she read well, too well. The older women of the temple became even more disgusting in their acts of abuse with Green because of the voice given them by Kellgren.

Katherine Kellgren - what more need be said?
Revisado: 03-06-14
Would you listen to Her Royal Spyness again? Why?
Yes!!! This is a fun crazy ride of a story, brought to life even more so because of Katherine Kellgren!Rhys Bowen and Katherine Kellgren - a wickedly grand combo!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Georgiana of course!
Any additional comments?
Katherine Kellgren is my weakness in audiobooks!!! I would adore listening to anything she narrates, be it book or instructions on how to build a toilet. She is a master with timing, voices and bringing enthusiasm into a story. I thoroughly enjoyed Her Royal Spyness when I first read the book. I LOVED the story after listening to the audiobook. Do yourself a favor and check out this or other books which have been narrated by Katherine Kellgren. A little bit of "royal" Nancy Drew mixed with a wee bit of female Sherlock Holmes tossed with a heaping amount of plucky naive innocence entering the cruel real world. Georgie faces each dilemma she encounters with a charm most endearing. A fun read and I can't wait to read more about Georgie and all her escapades!

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

It's big, it's steampunk, it's alien and crime
Revisado: 03-06-14
Any additional comments?
It took me quite awhile to really get into the story. At first I was scratching my head and even began another audiobook, however, I came back to this because I HATE not completing a book once I have started reading/listening. Upon continuing I am glad I did. I warmed to the story and began enjoying the tale. I almost think this was one of those books I should have "read" first before listening to it. Bronson Pinchot does a grand job narrating.
So much has already been said about this book I cannot add much. Although Jake Sullivan is suppose to be the main character, I think more of the story is about Faye Vierra. She is an unknown factor, a bit simple, has a big heart and cares deeply. There is so much going on in this book, several tales coming together towards the end. It's big, it's supernatural, it's steampunk, it's alien and it is crime. Almost every genre is encompassed within. I will be returning to this some day and "reading" the book.
There's some foul language, not like every other sentence, paragraph or anything. But if that's a put off, then avoid.

Almost as fun & adventurous as the written book -
Revisado: 03-06-14
Any additional comments?
I liked the story as narrated by E. B. Stevens. He did a very good job with the many different voices. However, as the narrator in-between the different characters his voice became almost hypnotically soft spoken. This caused me to drift off, think of other things, etc. I am happy I had "read" this book before listening to the audio version. I only wish it were Simon Vance who narrated this series.
The tale is still just as fun, adventurous and epic as before. Honor, friendship, camaraderie, choosing between right and wrong, seeking truth, endangering one's self to rescue another, taking responsibility, enjoying fellowship, learning to overcome fears and learning a good book is always a good friend!

A sad yet hopeful story
Revisado: 03-06-14
Would you listen to Tallow again? Why?
Yes. It left me wanting to know more.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes!
Any additional comments?
Eloise Oxer did a very good job with this story. I will be looking forward to the other books in this series.
A sad, and yet, hopeful story. Tallow lives with much angst, deception and loneliness. She learns she is of a race which has been hunted for the past several centuries and is the reason she must go about as unnoticed as is possible... as a boy.
Fear of self - being noticed - getting caught - loosing friendships. Dressing and living as the opposite sex, for safety. Learning to use magical abilities, learning self confidence. Selflessness, selfishness, greed, friendship, love, family, adventure, good vs. evil, a city much like Venice, imbuing emotion into wax - happiness - love - comfort - etc, merchants and guilds, mentor, secrets, a boy and a dog.
The tale is left with somewhat of a cliff hanger. If your one who despises this, then have the next book available to read.
