Historia
Maria Montessori (1870 -1952), the physician and educator, was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome Medical School. Her classic of educational philosophy is still relevant today. The author explains to parents and teachers how to free a child through its own efforts. First published in English in 1912, these tried and trusted methods have proved their worth for over a hundred years.

What's up with the narration?
Revisado: 01-17-24
While I found listening to Maria Montessori's practices and perspective, the narration was very distracting. I'm not one to typically complain about the narrators and I generally find most narrators to be great. I'm not trying to be mean, but this narration was very distracting and I found it to be worse than modern AI voice generation. It was very stilted and robotic and even mispronounced words a several times.
Maybe pass on the audio book and just buy the print version.

Historia
A brash, enlightening, and wildly entertaining feminist look at gendered language and the way it shapes us, written with humor and playfulness that challenges words and phrases and how we use them. Montell effortlessly moves between history and popular culture to explore these questions and more. Wordslut gets to the heart of our language, marvels at its elasticity, and sheds much-needed light into the biases that shadow women in our culture and our consciousness.

Fascinating book!
Revisado: 08-22-23
I've always been interested in language and this book does a great job not just delving into how we often use language to marginalize groups, but also just how we use language in general. I think this book would be just as interesting to those who are interested in language even if they do not consider themselves feminists.

Historia
First coined by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene, a meme is any idea, behavior, or skill that can be transferred from one person to another by imitation. Susan Blackmore shows that once our distant ancestors acquired the crucial ability to imitate, a second kind of natural selection began, a survival of the fittest amongst competing ideas and behaviors. Ideas and behaviors that proved most adaptive-making tools, for example, or using language - survived and flourished, replicating themselves in as many minds as possible.

Pretty Interesting
Revisado: 08-09-23
Overall pretty good and interesting. I think the theories in the book are a little strained, but overall the concept of memetics and most of what the book goes into feels pretty sound.

I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be very interesting and many of the mysteries I was unable to unwind before the book revealed them. Can’t wait for the Netflix show! I’m also looking forward to the rest of the series.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

HIGHLY RECONMEND
Revisado: 08-08-23
I’m a school Behavior Coach, I train teachers on how to deal with behavior as well as directly support students during crisis behaviors. Many of the students I work with have childhood trauma or ongoing traumatic experiences. This book does a great job going into the science of trauma as well as how we heal from trauma.
I found this book not just professionally valuable, but also personally. I have my own child’s trauma I’ve been trying to heal from. I highly recommend this book for anyone with trauma or anyone who works with individuals with last trauma.

Historia
Are you or your teachers frustrated with carrots and sticks, detention rooms, and suspension-antiquated school discipline practices that simply do not work with the students entering our classrooms today? Our kids have complex needs, and we must empower and embrace them with restorative practices that not only change behaviors but transform students into productive citizens, accountable for their own actions.

Good introduction to Restorative Practices
Revisado: 08-08-23
This book didn’t go as deep as I was hoping, but it does do a pretty good job explaining how to implement restorative practices for those with little exposure or understanding of where to start.

Highlighting the fascinating link between a child’s neurological development and the way a parent reacts to misbehavior, No-Drama Discipline provides an effective, compassionate road map for dealing with tantrums, tensions, and tears - without causing a scene. Defining the true meaning of the “d” word (to instruct, not to shout or reprimand), the authors explain how to reach your child, redirect emotions, and turn a meltdown into an opportunity for growth.

I’m a Behavior Coach and I support teachers by training them on dealing with behavior as well as working directly with students during crisis behavior. This book does a great job education about why restorative behavior approaches are more effective and why they’re more affective. Highly recommend for teachers and administrators!

Historia
This audiobook attempts to spark public discussion by revealing the tainted origins of modern policing as a tool of social control. It shows how the expansion of police authority is inconsistent with community empowerment, social justice - even public safety. Drawing on groundbreaking research from across the world, and covering virtually every area in the increasingly broad range of police work, Alex Vitale demonstrates how law enforcement has come to exacerbate the very problems it is supposed to solve.

Very Thought Provoking
Revisado: 02-04-23
As a long time educator and current educational leader I found this book to be very thought provoking. Not only does Tony Wagner outline what is wrong about our schools today, but he also gives solutions and points to real world examples of schools making change and being successful. I think this book is a must read for any educational leaders. I only hope that I can start conversations in my own district to help close the global achievement gap .

Dated
Revisado: 12-16-22
I didn't know when this book was published when I started it, it was recommended by a friend. While listening I thought it sounded very 90's in terms of research and social ideas, and I was right! This book is very dated and in my opinion not worth listening to. Currently trying to find something more recent and with better ideas to recommend back to my friend, but sadly haven't found anything yet.
