Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

No plot or character attachment
Revisado: 09-03-23
I was excited for this book, but I was severely let down. The book starts out well, but I kept waiting for something to happen. The story follows the members in a family over several decades, but it left so many questions unanswered. There wasn’t a main character and when one of the primary characters died, it was often just glossed over.
The only redeeming quality, was that I was able to learn something about the struggles Koreans in Japan faced.
The book changes the character of focus throughout the story, but does so much more often as the book progresses. Sometimes it goes back and tells what happened to past characters, sometimes it doesn’t. In the end it changes so often it is hard to follow.
This book left me wanting for so much, but not in the good way. The narration was decent, but it was difficult since there was only one narrator and too many characters.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Great, inclusive story
Revisado: 06-17-23
I am so glad this book was suggested to me. It does feel very YA other than a couple of sex scenes towards the end. Overall I thought the story was great and I think the narrator did a good job. I wasn’t as fond of the male narrator, but he wasn’t bad. The story gave equal power to every gender in a way that didn’t feel forced. There was a (minor) character who was referred to with they/them pronouns which I loved. Maybe I’m reading the wrong books, but I don’t hear that often and loved it. I feel like this may be a book that is better when it is read rather than listened to, but it did not disappoint.

Exactly what I needed but didn’t expect
Revisado: 03-14-23
I loved this book. The narrator does a great job. The story is fantastic. The character development was great. It tugged at my heart strings. Made me angry. Made me cry. Made me made at the author, then love her. I love that it is a two book series rather than 4-6 books. It does not feel drawn out. I highly recommend.

Too many birds
Revisado: 02-01-23
First, I want to say that each of the voice actors did a fantastic job. The narration was great. Story itself is wonderful. There were just too many noises in the background. It seems like every time the setting was outdoors, they were birds. So many birds chirping. I don’t understand the amount of music that was placed in between each chapter. It just seemed like they were trying to hard to add too many extra things to an audiobook. The narrator and actors added more than enough to the story, so all the additional sounds seemed excessive. it made me wonder if the production team has ever actually been outside of the country. There just aren’t that many birds chirping all the time. There were several points in the story, where I could hardly hear what the characters were saying, because there were too many background noises. I would love to listen to the story again without all the excess noise. It just seemed excessive and unrealistic.

I feel like this story had great potential but was ruined by the writing. There were several pieces that felt like the author was forcing things to tie together.

Historia
My clients at my vet clinic have always called me an animal whisperer. I’ve never questioned it. Until I started hearing monsters, too. A man came in right at closing with a sick dog. The dog told me why he was sick, and I was able to treat him. I had no idea his owner would kidnap me. I had no idea his owner had an entire dungeon of monsters he wanted me to treat. I’ve met a minotaur, a mysterious kraken, a phoenix, and this really massive spider. I can hear them, too. If monsters are real and I can talk to them, then what am I?

It’s just, not good.
Revisado: 06-05-21
I read the summary for this book and was excited to listen to it. After about 30 minutes, I hated it. I couldn’t get to my phone to turn it off and felt like I was being tortured. The narration is terrible. She uses different voices for the different characters, but everyone sounds monotone in their own way. Usually, I can get over bad narration for a good book, but the writing is terrible also. The monsters almost instantly fall in love with the lead character with no real explanation. The only partial explanation is that there is just something about her, she’s different. No real back story to help you get to know characters better. Any writing about intimacy or intimate parts felt like it was written by a 13 year old boy. The lead is a veterinarian but really the book is about her talking to animals. Her being a vet seemed pointless. The writing had so many holes in it. Things just seemed way too easy for the main character. If she faced a problem, she would find out she had a power that would solve it.

Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

This book is just full of surprises. The author and narrator do well to hold the “reader’s” attention. There were even a few occasions that caused me to exclaim out loud. The story progresses well and the characters are relatable.
