The threat of war has arrived at Diem's doorstep, along with a new discovery that could save her people. To use it, she must survive the next thirty days by forming a devil's bargain with the people she hates most: the royal family of House Corbois. As she dives into the world of the Descended elite, Diem quickly realizes good and evil aren't as simple as they seem. Old prejudices are challenged, and new loyalties blur the line between friend and foe.

Creepy But Not Overwhelming
Revisado: 03-02-25
I prefer less dark fantasy but this author really hit it on the nose with this book. Good character development, twisting plot, an anti hero you cared about. Awesome

Historia
Marra never wanted to be a hero. As the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter, she escaped the traditional fate of princesses, to be married away for the sake of an uncaring throne. But her sister wasn’t so fortunate—and after years of silence, Marra is done watching her suffer at the hands of a powerful and abusive prince. Seeking help for her rescue mission, Marra is offered the tools she needs, but only if she can complete three seemingly impossible tasks:

Quirky Characters
Revisado: 03-02-25
Beautiful ensemble piece that was slow to start but terrific as it picked up each character. I wish this really talented author weren’t so heteronormative though.

Historia
Cordelia knows her mother is . . . unusual. Their house doesn’t have any doors between rooms—there are no secrets in this house—and her mother doesn't allow Cordelia to have a single friend. Unless you count Falada, her mother's beautiful white horse. The only time Cordelia feels truly free is on her daily rides with him. But more than simple eccentricity sets her mother apart. Other mothers don’t force their daughters to be silent and motionless for hours, sometimes days, on end. Other mothers aren’t sorcerers.

Good, not Great
Revisado: 03-02-25
This was an excellent portrayal of an abused child but the side characters were flat in comparison or the plot was too slow, than too fast. Just missed being a great book. Atmospheric, but lacking in depth.

Romantasy Cliches Abound
Revisado: 10-12-24
I hate myself for wanting to read the sequel. There are so many moments where the main character is just stupid that my “suspend reality check” kept breaking. So I didn’t care about the protagonist and didn’t really care about the love interest.
Even the magical construction is, okay, it’s not terrible, but it’s not good enough to make up for bad characterization.
I’m struggling with getting the sequel cause I’m invested in the only good character, the evil nightmare. Ugh!

Historia
Aina’s world is governed by Toranic Law, a force that segregates people into upper and lower realms. It’s said that if the sinful lowers commit themselves to kindness and charity, their souls will lighten, allowing them into the peaceful upper realms. But Aina, one of the few lowers to ever ascend, just wants to go back home. Aina is desperate to reunite with her mother, hoping she’s survived the beasts and wars of her homeland alone. After failing to weigh down her soul with petty crimes, Aina joins a rebel group defying the authorities and bringing aid to those condemned.

Terrific world building and good main characters. Well paced plot
Revisado: 08-26-24
Really promising well written book that disappoints at the end with its machinations to set up the sequel. Still worth the read. Just fell short of its early promise.

Middle Age Road Trip
Revisado: 07-24-24
The privilege rolls off this character in a way that makes me want to grind my teeth. The author does acknowledge it somewhat. But if you ignore that, it’s a lovely white feminist story of a wealthy woman turning 50 and trying to find herself.

It’s the end of the world as you've never known it. Join the Librarian as he does his best to make the post-apocalyptic world a better place by protecting the weak, fighting injustice, squaring off against a group of former renaissance fair workers who have established a kingdom in the Rocky Mountains, and so on. Can one man make a difference in the face of such murderous cannibals and super smart bears? Probably not.

Sexism Survives Apocalypse
Revisado: 06-15-24
These books are funny and plot driven and fairly clever. But the sexism and heteronormative storylines (think Heavy Metal) are hard to ignore. Wish it wasn’t so heavy handed or I would read more. Ugh

Breathtaking
Revisado: 02-21-23
This intimate portrait of a albeit mythical historical woman is to me the best sort of historical fiction. How would women experience their lives in patriarchal societies? How could they claim and express power and what would it cost them?
Brilliantly read as well.
