Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

Great Story with a Poor Performance
Revisado: 03-06-25
A great story with a unique twist on typical science fiction tropes. However, the performer significantly damaged the experience. The words march out like an eReader or a Speak-and-Spell; occasionally broken up by exaggerated outdated stereotypical accents. The performer turned interesting characters into offensive cartoons.

A Thriller with Rich Characters in a Vivid Environment
Revisado: 12-28-24
The author created a vivid environment in which rich characters experience a thriller. The performer invoked the spirit of each character beautifully. Every once in a while, but rarely, you get hit with a simile that went too far. They seem to catch the performer offguard, as he clumsily thumbtacks a phrase to the end of an already perfect description.
Heists, car chases, predicaments, and a man figuring out who he is; with a backdrop of parts of Virginia often overlooked.

Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest.

Too Many Ideas
Revisado: 07-22-24
The title is very good. It has a great premise and the concept for the story is brilliant. However, the execution slips as the story transitions from one cliche plot odea to the next. It is not predictable but it can be tiring. There are too many ideas. It would be a lot better removing some of the twists in the story or make it a dark comedy and add even more.
The Narrator is excellent and pulls you deep into the story. However, he reads the protagonist with too much if an accent which confuses the description of the character who is supposed to not have an Iranian accent.

Historia
I was, in life, to be a gambler, a risk-taker, a swashbuckler, a knight. I accepted, then and there, my place in the world. I was a fighter of windmills. I was a chaser of whales. I was Not Sidney Poitier. Not Sidney Poitier is an amiable young man in an absurd country. The sudden death of his mother orphans him at age eleven, leaving him with an unfortunate name, an uncanny resemblance to the famous actor, and, perhaps more fortunate, a staggering number of shares in the Turner Broadcasting Corporation.

Amusing Story with Percival Everett Humor
Revisado: 10-02-23
Another great title by Percival Everett. Similar in humor to Dr. No but the author's use of characters that are apparently totally created by the author is brilliant. It touches on race and stereotypes but in a different way than his other titles.
The reading was also well done. The reader's timing and tone complimented the wordplay and deadpan humor of the title. There were a couple of editing flubs, but it was otherwise perfect.

Amidst this collective nervous breakdown furniture store owner and ex-fence Ray Carney tries to keep his head down and his business thriving. His days moving stolen goods around the city are over. It’s strictly the straight-and-narrow for him—until he needs Jackson 5 tickets for his daughter May and he decides to hit up his old police contact Munson, fixer extraordinaire.

Rich
Revisado: 09-30-23
I enjoyed this second title about the Harlem furniture salesman. The characters are familiar but unique. The best developed character is New York City itself. The author takes you inside parts of a dynamic city at one of its inflection points.
The performer added the perfect tone to complement the story.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Was This on Purpose?
Revisado: 06-25-23
The first third of the story was amazing, but the story and the writing peters out after that. If this was purposeful, it was brilliant and in the spirit of the story. If not, it is still very good and the author seemed to enjoy writing it.

Historia
Why can humans alone invent? In The Pattern Seekers, Cambridge University psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen makes a case that autism is as crucial to our creative and cultural history as the mastery of fire. Indeed, Baron-Cohen argues that autistic people have played a key role in human progress for 70,000 years, from the first tools to the digital revolution. How? Because the same genes that cause autism enable the pattern seeking that is essential to our species' inventiveness.

Interesting Concept but Fell Short
Revisado: 05-01-23
The concepts are interesting, but many of the authors' points are stated as fact with little support. The author does provide some good examples but is quick to gloss over counter examples. The narrator is very dry and perhaps takes away from the content. The comparison to mechanics or simple engineering was juvenile as if the author was dumbing down the material or simply didn't understand it.

Historia
Kevin Pace is working on a painting that he won't allow anyone to see: not his children, not his best friend, Richard, not even his wife, Linda. The painting is a canvas of 12 feet by 21 feet (and three inches) that is covered entirely in shades of blue. It may be his masterpiece or it may not; he doesn't know or, more accurately, doesn't care. What Kevin does care about are the events of the past.

Well Woth the Wait
Revisado: 12-25-22
It is a good story once you figure out what is going on. So it takes some patience to get through the dry delivery and the shaping of the story. This title is very different than the only other two Everett titles I am familiar with.
The performer is very good but seems to be the wrong voice and inflection for this title. The innocent church-boy voice ditracts from the characters and their situation. I would listen to other titles read by this performer but it wasn't a good match for this title.
Like the other two Everett books I am familiar with, you will finish this title satisfied with your lack of satisfaction. If you can't handle that, skip this title; if you can, it is very much worth it. Tell a friend so you can argue for days.

Historia
Percival Everett's The Trees is a must-listen that opens with a series of brutal murders in the rural town of Money, Mississippi. When a pair of detectives from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrive, they meet expected resistance from the local sheriff, his deputy, the coroner, and a string of racist White townsfolk. The murders present a puzzle, for at each crime scene there is a second dead body: that of a man who resembles Emmett Till.

Not Dr. No
Revisado: 12-17-22
I very much enjoyed Everett's Dr. No and went back to Trees without reading any reviews or summaries because I very much like how the author slowly twists the plot. Trees is not from a genre I typically enjoy but the author has talent. I did not expect the title to be about a mystery with race and politics as a dominant theme. The performer has an great voice and creates the right atmosphere for the deep south. However, I had to speed it up a bit because of his slow cadence.

The protagonist of Percival Everett's puckish new novel is a brilliant professor of mathematics who goes by Wala Kitu. (Wala, he explains, means "nothing" in Tagalog, and Kitu is Swahili for "nothing.") He is an expert on nothing. That is to say, he is an expert, and his area of study is nothing, and he does nothing about it.

Silly, Dry, and Brilliant
Revisado: 12-11-22
This title was well written and well read. The author did an amazing job at telling a silly story with ridiculous characters that were captured perfectly by the performer.
The author does an excellent job telling the story from an African American perspective without resorting to stereotypes.
