Historia
Thoroughbred racing was one of the first major sports in early America. Horse racing thrived because it was a high-status sport that attracted the interest of both old and new money. It grew because spectators enjoyed the pageantry, the exciting races, and, most of all, the gambling. In The Sport of Kings and the Kings of Crime, author Steven Riess fills a long-neglected gap in sports history, offering a richly detailed and fascinating chronicle of thoroughbred racing's heyday.

How to take an interesting subject and ruin it.
Revisado: 02-03-20
I was very excited about purchasing this book because it sounded so interesting. I am a student of both horse racing history and U.S. History, and I thought there was no way this book could fail. I slogged through the excruciating introduction thinking the book would improve once it got to the regular chapters, but they were more of the same. I have not been able to get very far into the book, but there is not one good thing I can say about it, which is a shame because it really is such a great subject. I noticed on the Amazon reviews someone recommended it and commented that they could hardly wait for the next book about racing in Chicago to come out. At the time I read that review I felt excited about another such book as well, but now I know I could never read another book by this author.

Historia
A revolutionary approach to the techniques of working with horses, by a renowned instructor. In Horses Never Lie, renowned horse trainer Mark Rashid challenges the conventional wisdom of "alpha leadership" and teaches the listener to become a "passive leader" - a counterpart to the kind of horse other members of a herd choose to associate with and to follow. Applying Rashid’s principles and techniques helps cultivate horse personalities that are responsive and dependable regardless of the rider.

Gives a whole new perspective on horsemanship.
Revisado: 02-03-20
Since I have three young horses to start this year I decided to purchase a few books that might give me some inspiration, direction, and advice. Almost against my better judgment I bought “The Man Who Listens to Horses” by Monty Roberts. Several years ago I bought a book by Buck Brannaman. Many, many years ago I read Ray Hunt’s book. The Ray Hunt book and philosophy have been very helpful to me over the years, but normally I have only applied his ideas in very specific circumstances. I think that there are definitely things a person could learn from Monty Roberts if you can take his attitude. For whatever reason I could not get much out of Brannaman’s book.
I say all that to say that I got more out of this book than I did all the others except for possibly Ray Hunt’s (but I found this one more enjoyable than Ray Hunt’s). For one thing, it seems much more practical for the average person wanting to wok with his or her own horse. I do not and never will have mustangs that have never had a human hand laid on them. I also have no reason or desire to take an unbroken horse and have it riding within 30 minutes. I can appreciate the horsemanship that allows some people to be able to do that, but I’m never going to be able to do that. Mark Rashid doesn’t ask people to work instant miracles on their horses. He encourages people to take their time with their horses and try to figure out what the horse is thinking and feeling at any given time. He encourages people to build a trust relationship with horses by moving slowly and calmly around them. He invites horse handlers to learn to listen for a horse’s “try.” These are things I can do.
In addition to the practical advice the book offers, I am especially grateful to Mark Rashid for illustrating through his stories just how intelligent horses are and how anxious they are to please. I’ve been around horses for most of my life, and in many ways have appreciated their intelligence and willingness to please, but have still underestimated both. This book has me excited about working with our horses and really listening to them and learning from them. Hopefully a whole new adventure in getting to know our horses is in store for me. Thank you, Mark Rashid!

Larry McMurtry's American epic, set in the late 19th century, tells the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, a drive that represents not only a daring foolhardy adventure, but a part of the American Dream for everyone involved.

McMurtry at his best!
Revisado: 12-06-11
Larry McMurtry is a wonderful writer, and can even count Stephen King (according to his memoirs) among his fans. I've enjoyed several of McMurtry's books, but this must surely be his best. His development of character is inspired and his dialogue is so real it's actually better than real life. There were many times that I laughed out loud at things his characters said. Audible can boast of several wonderful readers, but this one is still up there among the very best. I highly recommend this book. I should say that there are some sad moments. It's very dangerous to be a character in a Larry McMurtry novel, because there is no character so central to the story that they can't die.

As good or better than the movie
Revisado: 12-05-11
I loved this movie when it came out but I was left with a lot of questions. To allow the story to flow the movie understandably assumed a great deal of knowledge. If you felt the same, this book will solve that problem. It places the events of the story within the context of the times in which they occurred. Not only that, it also helps you understand just why this playboy senator Charlie Wilson ends up being the force behind US covert actions in Afganistan. You see the two sides of a very complex man. The author very deftly reveals the paradox that is Charlie Wilson without either overly glamorizing his good side or excusing his excesses. He somehow managed to tell the story and not make any judgment on Mr. Wilson's character. He was what he was. Some of what he did was inexcusible, but other things were frankly heroic.
Perhaps one of best things about the book was that I came away with a much clearer view of why, after the US offered so much aide to Afganistan, they could come to hate us so much. That is the kind of history writing that makes a useful contribution.
I gave the book four stars only because some of the books I've listened to at Audible are so outstanding that I think they deserve distinction. This book may not be for everybody. While it's true that it fills in knowledge gaps left by the movie, in some cases it may be that it gave more information than I needed. It is a long book and may not fit everyone's tastes. Still, if the subject interests you, it is well worth the effort.
A word about the narrator: He was a perfect fit for the subject matter, handling some difficlut subject matter and names with seeming ease.

Great book, great narration
Revisado: 12-05-11
The content of the book really needs no review from me since people have loved it for years, but I will say a few words about it. It would be easy to pick this apart because of our politically correct atmosphere in this country. Many of the attitudes expressed are a little hard to take in light of the way we think about race relations today. However, if you can accept those things as an attempt by the author to express the attitudes of the people of whom she wrote, there is a great deal of wisdom in the book. There is also a great deal of history woven into the story-line. This book was, in fact, one of the books that led me to declare history as my major many years ago.
As for the performance, I can hardly say enough. I don't know enough to say just how accurate the narrator is with her renditions of various dialects, but she certainly makes them believable. Several different southern accents as well as an Irish brogue are represented in the book, and she handles them all admirably.

An old classic very well read
Revisado: 12-05-11
I first read this book as a young child and loved it from the very first reading. It is one of those books that only gets better as I get older. This reader was very well-suited to the material and added to the enjoyment of the book. Even though I had read the book many times, listening to it this time still brought tears to my eyes.
