What did you love best about Soldier Girls?

I loved this book, how well-rounded it was, detailing the optinions and thoughts and experiences of three female soldiers from vastly different backgrounds - those who fell apart, those who kept it together. While it is a unique look at female soldiers, this quite conceivably could have, for the most part, detailed the morale of any group of soldiers fighting in these wars.

Any additional comments?

The narrator and the author seemed to team up and deliver a compulsively readable package! I loved Thorpe's "Just Like Us" and was thrilled that she wrote another book.
Well worth your time and credit.

Would you listen to The Return again? Why?

Probably. I enjoyed the writing and the descriptions of the Spanish Civil War. The contemporary story is less strong, and honestly somewhat unnecessary, but it's still a well-written book, so I will probably listen again

Have you listened to any of Jane Wymark’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't yet, but I will dig some of them up!

Who was the most memorable character of The Return and why?

I would have to say mercedes, growing up and coming of age in such a difficult time in history.

Any additional comments?

Well-done! With the inclusion of some coincidences, I can't give this book 5 stars, but it is still a good read. I will read more from this author and narrator.

Would you listen to Under a Sapphire Sky again? Why?

Definitely! I am not generally a huge fan of beach reads, but this one stands above many of them. Most (if not all) of the characters are three-dimmentional and complex, and Susannah Bates has a way of intertwining relationships in such a way as to show the interconnectedness of people.
Many authors tackle subjects of religions heavy-handedly, either treating Christians as angelic saints or little demons. Bates breathes life and complexity into characters like Sophie and Paul, even detailing a crisis of faith with grace and class.

Julie Teal is a fantastic narrator. I was introduced to her work in "the English German girl" by Jake Wallis Simons. Teal does fantastic emotions; her dialogue is very good. She doesn't try too hard to depict male characters, and I enjoy this immensely... it's better to acknowledge one's weakness than try too hard and do a bad male voice.

Who was your favorite character and why?

marianne, George, Sophie, Paul. For different reasons, I wanted to take all of them out for drinks.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book moves along, and the characters drew me in. Not huge on plot points, but as a light read... some portions made me cry, as well as intrigued me with their relational complexity.
