Lots of whining
Revisado: 04-10-25
I tried to connect with the main character but I just couldn’t. I just didn’t find her likable. She kept perseverating over the same concerns, and this, along with the prolonged whining, was unbearable. I usually try to stick it out to the end, but my time is valuable, too, and I just couldn’t subject myself to it all any longer. I escaped after the 12th chapter. Whew!

Too much noise and overacting
Revisado: 04-04-25
For all its urgency and hysteria in the narration, I found this story rather boring. Noisy, lots of yelling, lame plot, unlikeable characters, distracting sounds, no character development. I am left with the question: why do people like this? Not my type of audible experience.

Flat and tiresome narration, weak plot, poor character development
Revisado: 12-18-24
The narration for this was almost unbearable for me. I almost could not wait for it to be over! That is rarely happened to me and especially not with this author. I have enjoyed the author’s other series, but this was so boring overall I almost could not finish listening. I hate to do that, so I persevered, but it was not enjoyable for me. I really loved the DC Smith and Kings Lake series and the narration on those are fantastic and spot-on. This narrator’s style, however, was very poor. She barely differentiated between voices and her narration was almost monotone. It just was soul-killing and stifling to listen to.

Excellent narration, of course, with many plot twists and turns that held my attention
Revisado: 02-06-24
At first, I had a bit of a hard time with this one, because the premise was a bit depressing. But the story and the characters came to life as I continued to listen, and I was pulled in by the surprises revealed and by the strength of the character development. This is definitely a worthwhile listen, and I enjoyed the way that the author revealed the character’s true natures through their actions and choices. Overall, I think the story line was inventive, with unexpected elements that kept me invested in the reaching the final outcome. And I just love Nicola Walker, she did not disappoint!

Too-notch writing and excellent narration.
Revisado: 02-11-23
This is a well-crafted mystery with interesting plot twists and a likable, relatable main character. I also enjoyed the backdrop of the frigid Minnesota winter, the writer’s attention to detail, and his understated sense of humor. The story was well-paced and held my interest from start to finish. Many stories of this genre are told with a consistently urgent tone (exhausting and annoying), are overblown and overly dramatic, and kind of smarmy. This is not that kind of story! Instead, the author has given us a smart, solid work of crime fiction that also has heart and soul. I highly recommend!!!

Predictable, cheesy and disappointing
Revisado: 11-28-22
I guess when you are a big name writer you can get away with stuff like this. The basic concept was interesting, but all the hands were overplayed and there was really no suspense or mystery. The acting was good, very good, but what a lame plot. It was a freebie for me this month, so no loss there, but I wouldn’t recommend using a credit on this one. Listen to The Big Lie podcast instead. Now THAT was on point in every way.

Sexy steamy whodunnit
Revisado: 10-19-22
I thought the narration was good. I appreciated that the narrator didn’t relate everything in a tone of exaggerated urgency throughout the whole novel. Sometimes that happens with suspenseful stories and it’s a bit annoying because not every moment is actually suspenseful and it is tiring to hear it read that way. The storyline was intriguing and also disturbing and brutal at times. Perhaps the most disturbing was the rationalization of really immoral behavior on the part of the two protagonists but I won’t say more about that because I don’t want to give the plot away. And I am not talking about the sexual stuff when I say that. Also, there are a few plot holes. But all of that being said, I did get drawn in by the story and this is my first story by the author. I had read about her in the New York Times and her success story and how popular she became as a self-published novelist, which is pretty amazing. So overall it was a story that pulled me in and kept me listening all the way through. Is it great literature? No. Is it a little trashy? Yes! A bit of a cliffhanger? Yes! Well written? Yes. Also other reviews caution that there is some description of child abuse which is very disturbing so please be aware of that. Overall I give it 4 stars. I feel it was well done for this type of genre If you like this sort of tale, then you’ll probably like this story. I am in like

A simple but moving story, beautifully told
Revisado: 10-11-22
This is a true story, told through the eyes of a nine-year-old boy, The author gives a compelling account of his perilous journey to be reunited with his parents in “La USA.” Told with compassion and love, and recounting the many nuances of the humanity of the people he encounters along the way, the author recreates this traumatic childhood experience in a very relatable and touching way. He opens the door to a world that many of us will never experience, but through sharing his story, the author allowed me to develop deeper compassion and greater understanding.
Regarding the narration, which is performed by the author, I very much enjoyed the tone of his voice and the very believable way he was able to tell the story of his younger self. I did find the pace a little bit slow and halting overall, so I bumped the speed up to 1.1x and that sounded better to my ear.
Overall, I loved this story and it really did make me cry at several pivotal junctures. Well done, Sr. Zamora!
