Terrible fake French accent.

Predictable story as in you knew what every twist was prior and could even recite the narration. AGHHHH! I'm sure the actor was attempting to modulate each character's voice but along with the fake French accent (atrocious), I had trouble listening to the other characters as well.

Gothic novels are not my forte but selected for our book club as the haunting season is nigh! The story has a creepy castle and creepy characters plus the rather flighty Noemi. Sorry readers as listeners but I did not enjoy the narration at all. I found her cadence so predictable with zero modulation. Overall I will say that this story will make for a fun book club meeting though. I must find a dress like the cover photo!

I really enjoyed the book. Seems as though there was enough set-up for a sequel but I don't see it on Audible. There is not much conflict between characters so if you are looking for more good vs. evil....probably not the book for you.

You will anticipate the dialogue!

Contrived story, clueless female character, awful dialogue. When you are listening while riding your bike and can anticipate the dialogue, you might get strange stares by others on the trail as you outwardly groan!

Bookclub choice

A pal and I chose this book for our upcoming bookclub choice. I highly recommend the Audible recording as the different narrators made the story.

Different genre for me

I am not a fantasy genre reader. It was at a special price so I gave it a go and I enjoyed the story. I listen to Audible when I’m riding my bike and recently while attempting to cane a chair (why not!). I plan to download the 2nd book simply to find out what happened to those “left” at New Hope. I enjoyed the various character’s story lines and hope there will be inclusion of them in the 2nd. I did not realize I was to be hooked into a series but now I am. Shout out to the narrator!

Reading vs. Listening

I enjoy each new Bruno mystery and this was my first Audible vs. text book. The narrator made many pronoun agreement errors that interrupted my enjoyment of the story as I was continually correcting the narrator (he didn't listen!). The American accents sounded Irish causing some additional confusion. I felt the story lines with Pamela and Isabelle are now tired. Time for Bruno to find a different woman. Always enjoy the food preparations and descriptions of small town French life. I will probably look forward to the next book in the series but hope the character's life evolves more.
