This novel felt like it was written for a middle school audience but was packaged for adults. The main character acts like she has the intelligence of an 8 yr old but is supposed to be in her 20s. Her naivety and infantailized behavior is off putting. There's no sense of danger or consequences in the early chapters. It's like "Deus ex machina: the litrpg". The central conceit about her luck stats are fine, but that means her challenges have to come from somewhere else. Instead she stupids her way into better and better circumstances. I finally gave up in the chapter where she commands her demon legion to play tag because that's the most interesting way she can think of to pass the time. Hey guess what... if your main character is bored, so are we. I feel like I'm reading someone's unedited nanowrimo project.

The main character is presented as this feared, infamous, deadly, competent assassin but... she's actually unskilled, acts shy and inexperienced around boys, gets regularly manhandled by teenage boys in fights (wasn't she a deadly assassin who could kill them with one finger when she was introduced?), incapable of figuring out... well, anything. I enjoy YA, even YA romance. But go read the Scholomance, not this.

This novel begins with great action and will pull you through the story with a great pace. The main characters are well fleshed out and the world building is very interesting, leaving a lot to explore over future novels. I’m really looking forward to the promised sequel.

Let me say first that Mancour is a writer of considerable talent and his world building is second to none. I’ve had a lot of problems with his frat boy fantasy depiction of women in this series however, but that seemed to be getting better over time. Then - well, minor spoilers below.

So right during the middle of this there’s a situation when a young teenage girl is confronted by a young man who wants her affection. She has the gaul to tell him politely that she isn’t interested in romance with him. Then we spend several chapters throughout the rest of the book with the title character and several others taking her over the coals for daring to not give up her body to a guy who did so much (that she never asked for) to win her (because women are a prize to guys who earn their sexual favors by valiantly killing people who need killing). It’s some serious incel crap. This is tucked into an otherwise exceptional book, but as the father of a daughter, it really pissed me off. Mancour has some serious issues with women. Yes, I’ll probably continue to read his series and I’m not calling for a boycott or anything but it bears being pointed out for the cringy misogynistic crap it is.

Fun story ruined by terrible narration

I really wanted to like this story, but the narrator was just too much. His voice is for the characters went beyond cartoony to ridiculous and downright annoying. Almost every side character had a voice that was nearly unintelligible with a sentence cadence that made absolutely no sense. If I continue this series, it will definitely be with the e-book and not the audiobook.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series but this entry is lacking a strong story to go along with the customary humor.

This is presented as a book but it's actually a single lecture and the topic, while very interesting, is only introduced, not really explored.

this book is a primer for building Ministries that align with the greater goals of a church. My only criticism of this book is that it is not specific to Children's Ministry but truly is relevant to every Ministry within a church. I do believe it will be helpful for Ministries who feel that they are not being taken seriously in their local church.

Beautiful tale rooted in Eastern European culture

Naomi Novik weaves an enchanting fairy story that quickly leaves behind the tropes it seems to be inspired by, taking the narrative in unexpected directions and laying bare the fear, pain, sorrow and wonder of a heroine living through her own story.

Julia Emelin narrates the story beautifully. I could not disagree more with reviews calling her performance wooden or difficult to understand. If you don't have trouble with movie accents you shouldn't have any difficulty with this performance. Emelin speaks with careful clarity and the accent only lends to the folk ambiance of the narrative. Eastern European culture is not as loud, boisterous, or dramatic as American culture, and Emelin's performance is as nuanced as the culture it comes out of.

This book was recommended by the Writing Excuses podcast and I have rarely been so grateful for a push in the right direction. I highly recommend this novel and will definitely be picking up Novik's earlier books.
