This narrator is seriously unbearable
Revisado: 09-21-23
This narrator is seriously unbearable. His horrible choice of accents for so many of the characters is so distracting that it's constantly ruining my immersion in the book. The Fool sounds like an old hoarse German guy, All the Farseers and Kettricken sound like snooty fake horrible people who you would never want to interact with. And Reyn Khuprus' voice is completely unbearable - high pitched, whiny, nasal, and smarmy like a caricature villain. It's like this guy doesn't care or understand how various voices can capture the personality of a character, which seems like a SERIOUS drawback in an audio book narrator.

i really wish I'd read the narrator reviews before
Revisado: 07-03-23
I really wish i had read the narrator reviews before buying. it's unbearable, and constantly distracting, to be read to as if by a second grade teacher phoning it in to a group of children. I'm so aggravated by the narration that it's nearly impossible to actually get a sense for what's going on in the book and why i should care. My brain just keeps wandering to wondering about the process of hiring that went on for the narrator.
I don't know how many audiobooks I've listened to - hundreds? Thousands? But this narrator ranks in the top 3 -5 most distractingly bad I've experienced. Sorry, Blackstone Audio, you have some of my favorite narrators, but this one is just NOT one of them.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

this Roy Dotrice guy is distractingly bad
Revisado: 10-27-18
I've read the series, I've watched the show. I'm listening to the audible now while depressed and doing embroidery. I'm at Dance of Dragons by now, and STILL I'm CONSTANTLY irritated by the reader guy's accents and voices and constant mispronunciations of things. I realize there are hundreds of characters, but he changes the voices/accents/pronunciations seemingly at random, even within the same book. Most of his voices of the main characters sound like either Learning-Disabled Munchkin, or Random Phlegmatic Old Man Pirate, whether the characters are male or female. My willing-suspension-of-disbelief died several books back. I realize that being the reader of this series must be a difficult challenge, but I seriously feel like this guy's phoning it in. And my listening experience is not a good one. Still, a couple hundred hours into it. Obviously anyone buying these is going to buy them no matter what, but I really really wish they'd redo them with more attention to detail and not having Arya, Daenerys, Brienne, and half the other characters (male and female) sounding like stupid munchkins from the wrong side of the tracks. I don't even..

egad, my ears hurt
Revisado: 06-26-17
I love Ursula k LeGuin's writing, but the voice actor was distractingly painfully annoying to me, way too saccharinely girly melodramatic voice/reading, I don't think I'd have found it non irritating if I was 5. (for the record, voices like Melanie Griffith's also grate on me). Unfortunately I'd made the mistake of clicking Buy without listening to the sample. oops. bad me. YMMV, but listen to the sample first.

Historia
Only once did David Foster Wallace give a public talk on his views on life, during a commencement address given in 2005 at Kenyon College. This is the audio recording of David Foster Wallace delivering that very address. How does one keep from going through their comfortable, prosperous adult life unconsciously? How do we get ourselves out of the foreground of our thoughts and achieve compassion? The speech captures Wallace's electric intellect as well as his grace in attention to others.
