I’ve enjoyed a lot of Lisa’s books, but this was not her best work. The “romance” was forced, and frankly had me cringing the entire time. If they had kept it to a slow burn it would have been fine, but abuse victims falling victim to semi abuse disguised as lust from a new acquaintance is just plain bad.
The thriller/police work aspects could have been better fleshed out, and without the “romance” would have been tolerable. This desperately needed a stronger edit. The characters had no depth. The story jumps around a bunch without reason and without much in the way of reason or development.
The performance was well done.

Returned to get my credit back

Karin, if you read any of these, please call up Kathleen Early and pay her to re-record this book. It is unlistenable in its current state. I couldn't handle it, so I returned it to Audible to get my credit back. I missed half of the story because I would lose focus or lose all sense of the story because my attention was so absorbed by how bad the narration is.

I have read/listened to every other one of Karin's books. I typically enjoy them, and I've known Jeffrey was dead from day one as the first book I ever received was the book directly following Beyond Reach. I guess I'll never really know how he dies. And I think I'm ok with that at this point. I don't know how much Kathleen Early makes per book, but I assure you she's worth Every Penny.

Slow start, great finish.

It’s a good one once it gets moving! A little slow for the first half but then it really starts rolling.

Misses the growth

This book spends so much time describing weapons & trauma and very nearly no time focusing on the growth that leads to healing.
Hours-long stretches are left with no development of any kind. Character development is low.
Would have really benefited from better editing.

Good content, narrator is too florid

I was really interested in the content of this book, but the narrator sounds like she’s reading a cheeky romance novel and I can not handle it.
This is a science book. I understand that it’s about compatibility and relationships. But it does not need to sound like a rom com narrator talking over a 1980s Disney love story.
I’ll be finding the book version at the library to finish it.
