Excellent British Police Procedural
Revisado: 06-15-20
Exciting right from the beginning, starting with the brutal murder and beheading. DI Lorne Simkins is a relatable working mom. A great police procedural, with great characters, and taut tension from beginning to end. As the bodies are piling up, the DI is dealing with pressures at work and on the home front. Twists and turns will keep your heart pumping until the very end. I can't wait to read book two!

great story, anticlimactic ending
Revisado: 10-24-17
In usual Dan Brown fashion, the story was fast paced and we'll researched, but it felt a little stale as it went on, with the all too familiar cat and mouse hunts for relics with the beautiful woman while being chased by the zealot. Overall, enjoyable all the way through, but the big reveal was a bit disappointing at the end, at least to me.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

This book was a great way to hear and understand the Norse mythology. I've read the Poetic Edda, but that is written like scripture and less interesting than this interpretation. I realize poetic license was taken to flesh out the stories but this was great fun to listen to.

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Historia
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

After the first half, BORING
Revisado: 02-25-17
Would you try another book from Thomas Perry and/or Peter Berkrot?
No
Would you ever listen to anything by Thomas Perry again?
No
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator was okay. He kept slipping into out of character accents, enough that it distracted me.
Was The Old Man worth the listening time?
The first 17 chapters were "okay", a good time waster while walking the dog. Even though there were some annoying flaws up front.
Too many little errors, or things the main character did that seemed implausible. I really got annoyed when the book's "hero" settled in Geneva, IL. My teeth ground, reading the scenes of him walking his dogs at a park with a lake near the old stone quarry apartment where he lived, and that h walked to shopping. Anyone living in the area would know the stone buildings are in the older area of town, near the walking trails along the Fox River, not any lakes. There were several instances where things just didn't add up. For someone so clever he kept making silly mistakes.
Second, after chapter 17, there was so much filler, including AN ENTIRE CHAPTER about the son of a character who wasn't even part of the story. Boring, boring extensive back story or chapters that I suppose were supposed to endear the characters to us. Seriously, I skipped FOUR chapters without missing a thing. And when one character asks how they keep finding the hero, we are given a vague response which I found incredible and unimaginative. At that point I no longer cared about ANY of the characters. I hate wasting a credit, but finally I gave up trying to become engaged and stopped listening.
Bottom line: If you like conspiracy theory stories, there are much better choices out there.

Historia
The first storm comes from, of all places, the Minnesota zoo. Two large and very rare Amur tigers have vanished from their cage, and authorities are worried sick that they've been stolen for their body parts. Traditional Chinese medicine prizes those parts for home remedies, and people will do extreme things to get what they need. Some of them are a great deal more extreme than others - as Virgil is about to find out.

Meh
Revisado: 02-10-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
If you love President Trump, then you'll love Virgil Flowers, because they both speak the same way about women, and seem to share the same opinion of them. Except that's really unfair to Trump, since Flowers can't even work closely with one without tearing her down to a series of physical attributes. The story was okay, but nothing but a time killer for my morning walks, and even then, I had to stop before finishing the book.
Would you be willing to try another book from John Sandford? Why or why not?
I've given a few Virgil Flowers books a try, but his view of women is tiresome, sorry. I like Davenport, I will continue to read him.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
He was fine.

If you could sum up The Woodcutter in three words, what would they be?
Great revenge story
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The story was never dull. The only problem I had was how the police handled some of the investigation of the ex-wife, but over-all I loved it. I wasn't sure what to expect. Very pleasant surprise.
Which scene was your favorite?
Hard to choose only one.

I mostly listened to this while riding my bike or driving, so I only half paid attention. I lost interest fairly quickly because the reader was awful, her inflections all off time. the story was okay. maybe I'll try reading the next book to see if it's better without the reader.

One question - How did this ever get published?
Revisado: 07-11-12
What would have made Sailor better?
Where do I start? Spoiler Alert
Characters - NONE of the characters was likable, except possibly the sailor. Even the mother was disgusting, flinging the "f" word around constantly in front of her little boy and she was always drinking. Great role model. We the reader had the creepy pleasure of sharing a masturbation experience with almost every male character at least once. This author seems obsessed with sex and his own man parts. I've read a lot of thrillers, dirty gritty ones, but this was just dumb. Sorry. Every character was SO over the top cliche, it seemed like they were taken straight out of a characterization class for beginners. And there were way too many of them. This guy/girl/kid had about twelve people chasing after them. After a while they all ran together and I stopped trying to tell the assassins apart, since they were all so similar anyway. Brutal bad asses who kick kittens, yeah, we get it.
Story - There were so many flaws, I don't know where to begin. Every cop was an idiot and only the bad guys had any brains until they meet the hero, of course. And the one scene where the reader is TORTURED into sharing the dreams of every character in the story. Really? Who cares? By the end of the book I was hoping the bad guys would kill the very unlikable female main character. And again I repeat, the author must be obsessed by sex, but do we really have to know that all these guys are jerking off? Yes we know it happens, did you really have to make us share? These were like cheap shock shots, only they weren't shocking, just vulgar. If I wan porn I'll read romance - at least I'd get a little titillation with it.
I'm going to stop now, only because I've wasted too much time on this book already.
Would you ever listen to anything by Tom Epperson again?
Never
What aspect of Donald Corren???s performance would you have changed?
He made the child very whiny, even in places where it didn't seem to fit the scene.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. Terrible book. If I hadn't paid only five dollars for the audio-book, I would have been really upset.
